Latest Engine Install - Does Nothing Go Right?!

So, for any of you who ever work on stuff, how's this for my latest install.

My fav ski, my 02XP, sucked in water and broke a head bolt + rod.

I sent another engine I had to SES, however realized that it had a milled SBT head (reduces compression).

Bought a head on eBay that looked good. Got it, and the seller stamped a capital "K" right across the head. Right on a sealing line.

So, many angry emails, and $8 shipping wasted, sent that back. (They claim they didn't stamp it, I said bull $hit, sellers do it all the time, but why did you have to stamp across the damn sealing lip)?!

Get back on here, and Nick, Minnetonka4me hooks me up with a 951 head that has the domes in great shape - just needs painted.

Props to him, as he knows what's important in an engine... the insides!

Ok, so SES rebuilds the engine, and I send them the head. I get the engine back (props to them for waiting on me to get parts).

While the engine is away I had to replace the paddle-wheel sensor (old one died after a week!)... I pull the jet pump to find out my wear ring is toast.

Of course.

Bought a new style Delrin one (looks very cool). Very tight fit! www.osdparts.com for the win! (my fav shop for new parts).

Tossed in a new paddle-wheel just in time to learn that the GPS replacement for the sensor is now CHEAPER, easier to install, and MORE accurate!!! Can-Doo makes it, and soon as they have the 2 wire one, I may have to pick one up.

OK, so Finally get the engine and I'm ready to drop it in the ski... Ohh wait! the reeds are chipped and have a chunk missing.

FRACKING AWESOME (BSG reference)

Order up some Carbon Tech reeds... Only mod I'll make other than my Concord 15/20.

Reeds on, ready to drop this bad boy in the hull!!!

Ready, set, attach the oil pump pull cable. Notice that it's only 2 years old as the original OEM one broke. Notice, more importantly that where the cable attaches to the 'nub' on the end, is 75% CUT! FML... Find out that the one I installed is from Sorry But it's Terrible (SBT). and NOT OEM... that's why it was $100 and not $150... order one from OSD again, has to be ordered, but it's OEM, and I can't find anywhere else online to get an OEM one (not that I was really trying)... but most places only sell the Sorry But it's Terrible one.

The new OEM throttle cable from OSD came. Packaged well, and the ends appear more durrable. Hard to tell the difference between the SBT one and OEM, but I found a few small ones.

Ok, Oil cable is on! whoo hoo. (after fishing it through the damn handle bars)

Ready... cue the pipe! I didn't split it, so it should be a quick install...

AND it's bolted up it's in the bottom. Ready to start torquing it down!

AND... the 18mm bolt that is in the 'middle' of the pipe (above the MAG) STRIPS OUT

So, I'm looking for a utility knife here to end my miserable existence, but quickly realize I have a spare in the house...

(Yes, I have almost enough spare parts to build a ski, minus the hull).

I grab the spare, and then have to spend time cleaning up both pipe 1/2s, because of course those are split,

Get the pipe on to realize I put the long motor mount bolt on a rear mount, so have to swap those.

Installed the pipe! whooo hoo!

Now on to carbs, installed those, spiffy.

Installed all hose lines, zip ties galore, then air box, then oil tank, more zip ties!

primed the lines, filled the tank with 1L oil, and fired it up!!!

had it out on the water yesterday (damn it's cold), and ran like a champ.

Pulls hard but didn't want to WOT it too much :)

burned just under a 1/2 tank, going to burn the rest, then sadly most likely put it up for the winter.

Good times.

Anyone else have issues like this or am I just that Lucky?

Ohh, also this summer my Flawlessly running for 24 years Boat decided it would overheat, leak fuel, and blow a bearing on the trailer resulting in a destroyed hub...

AND it tossed 3/4 buddy bearings last trip.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has terrible luck. I definitely feel your pain.

This sounds par for the course for me as well. Any time I try and estimate time to do maintenance on anything, 1 hour usually turns to three.

My 98 xp was like that this year.. quick engine flip and sell right? HAHA.

Had weird mpem problems where the starter would pulse on every half a second-ended up toasting the splines on the starter. get a good oem, rebuild it, install, fix ground problem. Runs goof for about 3 hours.

Then it starts rev limiting and randomly dieing, sometimes starting again, othertimes not, find out regulators shot. So tried an external regulator, no luck, gauges were bouncing all over the place. Get another MPEM, problem goes away, next day out, open hood, close it, no power. -Split wire in wiring harness, most likely responsible for frying old mpem. Then get it out on the water to a friends cottage, met a buddy who was going to buy it, did that amazing high 60's speed run, then just took it for a nice cruise coming back, ski LOCKED UP solid! Rear carrier bearing under suspension seat bracket seized solid onto shaft! Get that all back together (Thanks OSD), blow a damn tire on the way to the cottage. 2 new tires, re-greased bearings and hubs. then sold the damn thing before anything else could go wrong LOL.

But when it comes to boats I/O's and Outboards, I'm a guru. When mechanics give up, I show up with an old honda civic loaded with tools and normally get it going that day! I've had alot of overheats and legs ripped off this year...

did you read my thread horrible vacation with my doo? i should rename it horrible summer.:cuss::D
glad you got it running:)

Stuff always happens. My 951 made finished the summer with around 325 original hours on it and still going strong. I'm going to roll the dice again and get to 350 before SES tune up

Funny you say that. I had put some on a GSXL I was messing with this past summer and that was a big part of my issue. Robbed a set off another ski I had till I got some oem ones.

I'm also looking at OSD for a carrier bearing for my 2000 XP.
Currently the seal spins with the shaft! It's a ticking time bomb... So it's winterized.

How hard is it to replace those bearings?
