I just picked up a 1997 gtx. it came with two lanyards. They both are in very bad shape. One doesent work at all. The other works, but no beeps. The ski runs ok but only produces about 5000 rpms and approx 30mph. If you push throtle all the way it wants to sputter, when you back off the throtle it seems to run ok. I read online that some lanyards are limited could i be using one of those. and if i buy a new lanyard, does it need to be programed.

You could be using a "learning" lanyard, or a "rental" Lanyard If you buy a new lanyard it will have to be programed by a seadoo dealer. Only a seadoo dealer has the programmer to re-program the lanyard because of the ROM chip in the cap. It communicates to the Mpem(Multi Purpose Electronic Module). the dealer can charge like$25.00- $50.00 to reprogram a lanyard cap.

Rentals....

You probably have a problem with your ski. Even though the rentals are equipped to run the engines at lower rpm's, I don't think they were available for that model. If they were, as a rental, I'm sure it would be torn up a long time ago.....
:agree: You will have to get a dealer to get and program your lanyards.
With the age of the ski and the problem description, I'd be looking at the RAVE valves. They are suppose to be cleaned once a season. If they have heavy carbon deposits or a bellows has a hole in it, then your ski will be limited in horsepower and rpm...........

Though it's probably not the case, you might have a battery problem.
On my brother's GSX, when the battery was low the DESS would be very tempermental with his sole lanyard, and he had some top end issues.

This is probably not the case, but it's worth a shot..

While sombody else bought this up, do the 95 Speedsters use the chiped caps? I have two of them also, just wondering if i have one that is a beginner one and one that isnt...

The 1995 speedster didn't have a DESS, (Digitial Electronic Security System).
It had a safety lanyard and a stop/start switch.
