I just can't win :banghead:

So, after going out and having a great time. WOT, 1/2 and everything in between was going great. There was a slight hiccup. I started to head back, since I have had problems with the boat, and then another hiccup and then, it was on one cylinder. Then stall. I was thinking a fuel problem, but it wouldn't start. Got out the paddles, my son and I had to paddle a little over a mile. It was kind of fun, but I was a bit miffed that I had yet another issue.

Well, I got it home and pulled the plugs and the aft plug was smashed. This was not looking good. Compression check, and I had 60PSI in the aft piston. A far cry from the 140 I had last weekend. I pulled the head and the aft piston was missing about 1/4 of the edge of the piston. This 1/4 of the piston was sticking out of the rest of the piston, the cylinder head and sparkplug. :willy_nilly:

So, here I am. I have yet to peel the carbs apart to see if it was a lean condition that caused the problem. I am not sure if that would cause this or not. The carbs were just rebuilt, and built to original specs. I have no reason to believe that this was the issue, except that it looks like a lean condition that caused the piston issue

The question I have, is it worth fixing or selling as a parts boat? I have seen rebuilt engines for $500-$800 and I am certainly not afraid of doing the work. However, I don't want to dump money in the boat to have it go kaboom again. It would be cool to do a motor swap, seems pretty straightforward. The real tricks look like lining up the output shaft and the motor, plus setting the degree on the rotary valve. Not to challenging.

Who sells reputable engines?

Thanks,

Kevin

What model and year boat do you have? It makes a difference on how much to fix and the cost of a rebuilt engine.

I personally would go with SBT.

Hi,
I read your other thread and it was linked to this one.
Sorry about your motor. I agree with Lou, go with SBT and the no-fault warranty

Thanks, for the condolences.

The carbs are in good shape as I just went through them with a fine tooth comb, but it could be a clog that caused all of this. So, they will come apart again when/if the motor swap is done. The hull is structurally sound but it could use new vinyl on the cushions. Something else I am capable of doing.

I was looking at SBT a few weeks ago since I thought this might happen. They seem pretty solid.

What other things should I do? If I am going to have it all apart, what other things should I look at? Not looking to hotrod it as I want something as bulletproof as possible.

Thanks,

Kevin
