I am new to this board and have some questions. I just got two older sea doos. one is a 1988 and the other is a 1989. They are both complete and have good compression. But no spark. Are theses like snowmobile engines and have CDI ignitions? Can parts still be purchased for them? I would like to get these thing running and clean them up for some beaters to have som fun with. Any help would be great.
Thanks

First i would like to welcome you to the forums. I too am new to the world of PWC and have found this site very help fully. You can get parts for the 89 if its a SP here and you really look for a maunal for it if you can find one. i know if you become a premium member you can download some but check to see if they have one for you year. This is a great site with great people and good luck with everything.

If you ask we will help.lol I just had to say that

hey....cut the plug wires back 1/4in from boot, and reinstall. Also, pull the coil out and cross reference the # to ebay. Tons of those parts for those skis out there....

I have a shop manual for them one is an 88 the other an 89 both have 587 motors. nether have spark. they were never run in salt water always fresh water.

Yes these models use CDI ignition/charging systems. So if you are familiar with snowmobiles of that period, then you have a good basis for working on these classic boats.

did these skis have a history of bad ignitions? The one has an MSD ignition whic is bad. the other is all stock just no spark. I was wondering if these early skis were known for bad ignitions. Thanks for all the help.

they only ran that ignition design for a couple of years. 88 to 91-early 92. i don't know it is really bad, but it was a first design. everything closed up inside the flywheel cover is a good idea...on paper. but then you need to work on it. all of the ignition stuff for these guys is all over eBay for dirt cheap. everybody is parting them out. not realizing they are trying to sell parts to everybody else who is also parting them out. very little fits newer models, so you are in a good position as far as supply and demand.

Very good point derek. :agree:

thanks,
I am just worried that if they were known for ignitions going bad, then I am just going to find another bad ignition on ebay or wherever and I am just trying to avoid buying another bad ignition. I find it odd that two skis 1 year apart have the exact same problem. I want to get these things running so I can work on cleaning them up and making sure everything is safe.

ok and another thing, What should I pay for one? I had one guy offer me two complete ignition boxes for $100. shipped. You guys think that is a fair price? They have the yellow engines if that helps. OH I bought these things for $250.00 with the double trailer. The trailer is galv. and I am pretty sure it is worht $300.00 by itself. so I am not looking to spen a million buck on two non running skis that have been sitting for 5 years:confused:
