Hey guys, I was out changing my jet pump oil today which was going very well, nice to see a nice new pump with no salt deposits! Any way I have the 96 gsx and the 97 xp. The 97 had a white plastic bushing in the cone and on the gsx there is nothing! Did I drop it? This is a picture if the gsx

The 97 has an anti-rattle device, it puts pressure on the impeller to reduce the rattle. Actually it doesn't do much if anything, The 96 doesn't have one.

Oh thank you Lou!!!! I was very worried I lost something, do you put locktite on the bolts that hold the cone on?
Thanks again Lou

Yes and you have to use the Loctite red gasket stuff on the oring. I forget the number. Have you downloaded the manual? Google them. They have all the Loctite areas and the type to use.

The manual calls for Locktite 518 on the "O" ring, I've always just used RTV seal. Use blue locktite on the bolts.

Lou

Crap I already put one back together and filled it up, I used a little grease on the I ring like the dude on the video did. Should have known the guy was a hack!! Ok I'll take her apart and start over

I used the blue loctite on the 3 screws and I think I put a little marine grease to hold the o ring in place (I think we watched the same video, yellow xp vid?)

Doing it the way the manual say is the safe way. Grease may work but the loctite is a real sealant. The pump will warm up the oil and create some pressure when warm. The oil may seep out then. And then it could pull in water when cool. May not, but best to be safe here.

Yep, I'm with you, going to pick up some sealant and do it the correct way. Thanks guys

Yea, mine works like a champ, no leaks..
btw, any Ace Hardware or even Walmart has/should have both the red and blue Loctite, as well as gasketmaker/rtv.

The loctite 518 isn't the stuff you use for bolts. It's a sealant, not a thread locker.

I was just stating that Walmart and Ace sell all of it, whichever one he wants/needs/chooses to use..
I DID in fact use the BLUE Loctite, regardless of what "number" it is, for the three bolts holding my cone on.. I did as per multiple people on here, including Lou if I remember correctly, as well as the Microfiche. Its actually Blue Loctite 242 to be exact

i used a bit of wheel bearing grease on the o-ring when i installed a new o-ring, it held the 10 psi for plenty of time, you're more likely to have a leak out of the shaft seal than that o-ring i'd wager.

I was going to make a similar comment, I've used nothing, pump oil, marine grease, and now I use RTV sealant (because that's what Dr Honda uses), I've never had a leak at the "O" ring, the only leak I have ever had in the pump was at the double lip seal, at the front end of the pump impeller shaft.

Just a little gear oil on the o-ring. Sometimes a new o-ring if needed. Also I take the pump off and fill the whole thing completely until there is no air left by tipping it around. Also blue locktite on the bolts.

Never had a cone leak but have pinched an o-ring :P
Only issue I've ever had was the front seal leaking like Lou.

Since no one actually mention it before. The red sealant you guys are talking about is an anaerobic sealant. Silicone will not adhere to the oily surfaces properly although I did my pump multiple times w/o any sealant on the oring and never had problems either. Whatever you do, do NOT use red loctite thread locker on the oring or the oil plug get a tube of anaerobic sealant.

Come on!!!! Everyone said use RTV so I did!! For what it's worth I used the RTV for differentials (oil resistant)

Come on. Like I said I did it many times w/o anything and never had water in there. I'm sure RTV is better than nothing.

Anyways, I'm just mentioning what the correct sealer should be, so some newbie somewhere won't grab a tube of red thread locker and try to use it on the oring and the plug.
