From what I have been able to research here, I think I need to replace the MPEM on one of my 1997 GTX. When I was riding I noticed that the dash gauges were not working whereas the last time I had it out they were. Later in the day the boys were riding WOT and hit a wake hard. When they hit, the ski just died. After having it slowly towed back to the dock, I checked fuel, oil, battery, and made sure the Dess was secured it still wouldn't start. Checked in the front electrical box and found the 5 AMP fuse was blown. Replaced the fuse and as soon as I put it in, it blew again. Checked for shorts in the wires and found none. Pulled the 15 AMP fuse out of the rear electrical box and replaced the 5 up front and it doesn't blow. As soon as I replace the 15 the 5 blows again. From what I have read, I believe this means there is most likely a short in the MPEM and needs to be replaced or repaired. Correct?

Also I want to make sure that I'm correct that if I replace the MPEM I have to have my "key" reprogramed or have to have the "key" that matches the MPEM I buy.

Thanks in advance for all your help that I know is coming.

Minnetonka can test it for you if you send it to him

and in the same respect, he can quote you cost for replacement, have him test old one first, and they are generally key'ed when sold, but not always, so in all likelyhood if you need a replacement, you would want to buy a key'd replacement to save hassle. so you'd just dispose of your old key with the old mpem.

I've had 3 mpem's key'd /tested by tonka, and ordered parts from him probably a dozen times, 100% satisfaction on my end.

If you have the VTS system unplug it. I can blow the fuse as well. Somehow they are connected through the MPEM.

Yes it will need reprogrammed.

As stated above, send it to Minerinka4me with the key. He can test and reprogram MPEMs.

also,
check ALL the grounds, again
look for corrosion, or loose wires or connections, do it again,
then go back and check all the grounds one more time...
consider adding a 2nd ground as welll...
I've chased many electrical gremlins before for hours ! only to come back to square 1, a dam bad ground.:banghead:
I suggest this especially since this happened after hitting a wake, seems to me its likely that something jiggled during the wake jump, vs something breaking inside the mpem.

check your pickup coil and stator first for shorts, they are a very common failure on the 800 motor.
