I have a 94 explorer and the hull thru fitting got destroyed when a bearing locked up on the drive shaft. The original part is black plastic/rubber. The replacement fitting/seal was brass. I called up Riva and they said you have to cut the original black rubber part. I do not blame Riva in any way. I started to cut the black rubber part out like you would remove a wear ring. That is not what the guy on the phone ment. Now I have a slot in the bottom of that area. Attached are pictures. Can I just fiberglass the entire missing area or does that need to have some rubber around it as well. Thank you for your help.

First things first-----Welcome to the forum.

I would glass it up. But..............you will have to make sure the thru hull fitting will go into it. But.....you will need to epoxy the new thru hull fitting in place.

First I would see how tight the new fitting is in what you have. Remove all the burrs from the cut edges. If you have to hammer it in now DO NOT DO THAT. If it slips in easily it's probably because the cut out. Just make sure you get it built up enough that is rubs against the fitting on the way together. But don't forget the epoxy on final assembly.

Thank you. I watched this video right after I posted. I thought I was removing the black rubber like you would a ware ring. I feel so dumb. Thank you again for your help.
