How many Volts???

Ok, so I've got a weak spark from my XP 657. I just wondered what voltage I should be getting both sides of the coil?

I'll check again tomorrow, but IIRC I think I was getting 32v and 24,000v at each side of the coil. Obviously 24,000v isn't enough to get the spark plug to spark properly.

What is the normal output for a decent spark from the plug? Can you buy 'special' spark plugs which don't need as many volts to spark?

Thanks for any help guys.

Normally you check the coil via Ohm readings. However I would trim back your plug wires 1/4'' and re-install the plug boots. Also, make sure your coil is properly grounded and there is no corrosion on the mounting bracket and the block.

Cheers, I've replaced the Plug and HT lead so I know these are ok. I'll check the grounding of the coil tomorrow too.

I've checked the earth on the coil and all looks fine. Can anyone help with what Voltage I am supposed to be getting at both sides of a coil? I guess any engine will do? Just so I know if I'm in the ball park with the readings I'm getting.

Cheers all

Unfortunately their isnt a good way to check components on the XP with 5 wire stator. If there is a small black box bolted to the same screw as the coil. its the 5 wire setup.

If it happens to be a 4 wire setup its a easy diagnosis procedure.
