I am rebuilding a 1995 spx that had an overheating issue when ran hard. I bought it in pieces for cheep. The previous owner said it had a low water flow from the pump when they disconnected the lines from the motor, so they took it all apart and never put it back together. I have the pump off and tried to blow air through it backwards but it has a lot of restriction, is this normal or should air pass freely through it. Is there a way to make sure the main water passages in the pump are clear before I reassemble it.

The pumps are very simple. There are just holes in the side that direct water in a tube up to the front. I would pull the pump, inspect the wear ring and change the oil. This way you can check the water/coolant holes too. If the wear ring is worn this can cause overheating too.

I installed a new wear ring and will be replacing the oil, bearings in the pump are smooth spinning and have no excessive movement. I figured the 3 holes were the intake holes in the pump that lead to the water supply line. I will try to blow some compressed air through it to be sure they are clear.
