Hi, ok here is where I am. I have a 1999 GTS limited I just picked up. I was told the start/stop switch was bad, but not the case There was water in the motor and the gear that is hooked to the starter that tuns the fly wheel (for get what it's called) was all eat up! So I replaced that and went a head and removed the motor because there was just no way to get all the water out. Put it back together, did a comp test and we have 120/125. We also have spark and fuel. I am thinking maybe the timming is off but have no clue out to set the timming on these things. if it was a car fine lol. It will not start and keeps back fireing. Please help me out if you can!

Thanks
Chris

hey chris...you should post yuor ski..etc, in your avatar....also, do you have a 99GTX, or GTS...
When you removed the motor, did you remove the intake along with a metal floppy look'n disc, and/or, remove the stator assy from the magneto housing..

I'm assuming it is a 99 GTX because his bendix gear(that's what he forgot the name was) was all chewed up.

First of all, if you had water sitting the motor for any length of time, odds are it will need a complete rebuild. Sure, you'll be able to put it all back together and get decent compression but it won't last. Tick....tick....tick....BOOM!!!

The timing is set electronically in the MPEM and can only be adjusted through BUDS, but if you're using all the same parts, you won't have to set the timing.

Have you checked your reeds? I suspect they are broken which is common when they fill up with water and the engine is turned over, the water pressure breaks the petals. This is why it is backfiring and won't run.

It is a 99 GSX limited edition. Rotax But I put everything back together and it started right up. The Timing on it was off. But it is running great now.
