No... you don't have to remove the engine, to remove the pump stator. It will unbolt from the pump end. Basically, remove the reverse gate... the nozzle, and then you can unbolt the stator.
The reverse gate and nozzle can come off as one unit, you don't have to remove them individually. Make sure you unbolt the trim plate from underneath, you don't have to remove the actual trim adjustment nuts.
