Finally got the boat on the water after installing my new Solas impeller and new delrin wear ring on my C180.

Overall...MAJOR improvement. Hole shot is improved significantly and top speed is up too! Before, the best top end I got was 45 MPH(on speedo) and today I got 49 MPH. I'm very pleased.

So....Not only is my boat performing better, I am now no longer intimidated on impeller and wear ring service.

Progressive pitch

do you know what the stock numbers are on the impeller? and what do those numbers mean?

In the numbers "14/19", this describes the progressive pitch. Fourteen is the degree of the pitch at it's outer edge and 19 is the degree at the inner hub. What this does is allow the same amount of thrust off the blade uniform all the way across the surface.

To explain a bit in detail; the inner hub covers a lot less surface area than the outer blade. If the pitch was one pitch, all the way across, by the time the water trailed off that leading edge, it would loose some of the inertia before reaching the nozzle. By increasing the pitch as the water is being spun of the impeller, which is designed to work more like a compressor than a propeller, it continues to maintain and build as the liquid moves through the pump. You can also change your speed by changing the outlet of your nozzle.

"Great Planes"!...

Yeah, I build RC Helicopters, and alot of people refer to the main blades as propellers....definitley understand and yes I roll my eyes too at times. But by definition they are correct:

Engineering:

A device consisting of a set of two or more twisted, airfoil-shaped blades mounted around a shaft and spun to provide propulsion of a vehicle through water or air, or to cause fluid flow, as in a pump. The lift generated by the spinning blades provides the force that propels the vehicle or the fluidthe lift does not have to result in an actual upward force; its direction is simply parallel to the rotating shaft.

Wow, so we have something else in common, I build and fly R/C airplanes. I usually get my kits from Hobbytown USA. I fly 40 scale.

I understand your quote as defined because the impeller does have blades, just as a gas turbine on a jet aircraft has them. Our jet pumps work simalar in that they "compress" for thrust. I don't believe I have ever heard someone say a jet aircraft had a propeller........

RC

I am lucky, Billings Montana has the largest RC Heli retailer online. 1 day UPS is great for Montana. I have never done anything with planes, We have some great Jet flyers here, though, Ad Clark, his son Addison and have watched Garland Hamilton fly quite a bit. Helicopters can tear through MC and Visa fast!

Helicopters?

Yeah, I know what you mean when it comes to cost. I've often wanted to try that move to the copters but when you price them out, especially the RTF models, your looking at an easy $600 bucks. Flying is fun and easy but time constraints to get all together for fun is also costly. Unless you own property to handle the planes, you have to find a place. But, a heli can be flown in the front yard. I'm not a member of a club, just like to free style.

Sorry for jacking the thread, but the R/C post was out of the norm here...

thanx...

Thanks for the explanation on the impeller! It helps a lot! Now im just curious to find out what a stock 06 challenger has? I think im going to do the SC washer rebuild and change out the impeller and ring this winter... I just don’t know witch one to go with! i do, do a lot of wake boarding! But what do you mean by changing your nozzle? Do they make smaller ones? I guess that’s what you would do, would be to put a smaller one on for more thrust???? Well thanks again! Also Craig if you get a GPS on that boat let me know what your top speed is..... That fastest I get mine up too is 44mph on the gps, with just me and now boat seats in it!... I norm hold about 32mph at 65 to 6800rpms cursing!

Gps

I'll bring the handheld GPS next outing. I can tell you that my speedo is actually pretty close as I compared it with a GPS in the past and I was suprised how close it was at that time. I can say that my 45 to 49 MPH were both readings from the speedo...True this can be misleading to some degree but I NEVER saw anything close to 49 MPH on my speedo before.

For future reference, call Dave at Impros. (909) 793-2900

No BS. He will ask what you have and what you use it for, and tell you what model impeller you need.

Furthermore, as he did with me, he will tell you "I have 2 'like new refurbished' impellers for half the price of the new ones, and I REFUSE to sell you a new one! Get one of these refurbished ones..."

I had it installed 3 days later.

EXACTLY the kind of business I like to do. No runaround, no monkey business, no arguing with me, or telling me I don't know what I am talking about, just a good recommendation, and he was DEAD ON with his recommendation. Pulls out of the hole in 2 seconds with a wakeboarder on!!!:hurray:

BUT!!! Expect to leave a message if it is racing season. He will be out in Florida or wherever the races are going on, and he won't call back until tuesday.
