Needed to have a new impeller and impeller housing unit put in my 95 sea-doo along with the seals, the shop charged me 12 hours labor for the job. Anyone know if this sounds about right for that kind of job or should I be bitchin about this. They also charged me 336 bucks to replace a starter on a second machine.

12 hours is pretty damn high...but $50 an hour is pretty low. Did you already pay for the work? If this is the case there isn't much you can do about it now other than kick up a fuss. If I was you I would try and find another dealer to work on my boat.

Matt

I'm watching this thread, to see what others are paying. I have no idea, 'cept it does not matter. I'd druther fix it meslef!

Assuming that it takes 200 buks worth of tools, and another 50 in parts, and some time, I figger I am ahead. I learned, and I did not have to pay for a college ejmakatshun!

This story behind this kind of thread is why many of us fix things ourselves!

Not only that, but if it fails, then we get to learn more!

Havent payed the bill yet. Nate, im the first to admit im not mechanicly inclined and dont mind paying somebody to do the work, I do mind getting overcharged though. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea how long that type of job really takes.

One of the things that can affect marine engines is salt. Has this one been run in the salt water?

If so, perhaps a few bolts broke, and other complications came with it.

If not, maybe it sat in mineral water.....

It sounds High to me, but 50 buks an hr is not too bad. Usually good shops are charging 75 an hr and some 100 buks an hr.
But, for a real good mechanic, they really can get alot done in an hr.

Let somebody else chime in. I like to let corroded bolts soak alot.

And, I suggest a flat price for future repairs. A really smart shop will sometimes say: We will fix it for a flat fee of______, unless we find other problems inside. After we take it apart, and see, we will call you and let you know if we find other issues....

Nate

Have you looked in the shop manual to see what is invovled? I am going to take a look right now. I will get back....

Matt

12 hours seems like a lot after looking at the manual....but still I have never worked on one of these....so lets wait and see if anyone else chimes in. I would guess the your mechanic is inflating his hours because his hourly rate seems low compared to most.

Matt

I think you got burned, more on the starter...600 buks, for new impellor AND housing, not bad. Whats wrong though, with old housing? wear ring? bearing?...etc

i replaced all the bearings. wearring and impeller on mine. i had to take the housing to a shop to remove the impeller. they only charged me $50 to remove it. it took them longer then they expected. but even with that charge i was still way under the charge or having them do it.

i own a shop and we only charge 2 hours to rebuild a pump and install it, I DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY WERE DOING.

sounds like you were screwed...bitch about it...:reddevil:

I am doing that same job in a 97 Challenger, many more parts to remove, still isn't taking me more than about 4 hours.

I also swapped my starter for less than $100. With a new one.
