You get them from ebay or forums like this. The Non-DESS just saves you wiring and getting more keys made since most people sell them with only 1 key. You current keys will work on the new MPEM after you would get them programed to it. Most people opts for the non-DESS since the DESS MPEMs have a factory plug that all the wiries go to just like your boat has now. So if you bought one of those MPEMs you need to get a plug or wire directly to the plug socket which is harder. The non-DESS ones just have wires coming out of it making it easier to wire for retro jobs.

then thats what i want. a non dess mpem. not trying to sound frustrated but just saying find them on ebay is exactly what is tough.. there are so many and i dont know what im looking for. and you say use forums like this. thats what im trying to do right now. are these non dess mpem's completely universal or do i need a specific one? would they come with a wiring schematic so i would know which wires to tie together? what exactly is it that i should be searching for? just typing in non dess mpem in google isnt doing anything but getting me more confused

ok you will need a wiring manual for both units to make sure you get the wires right. I mean you can buy them from people here and from EBay or where ever you like. As long as its from a 720/717 non-dess it you can make it work. There is not that many p/n for the older units.

If you good with electical, reading wiring diagrams, and repairing mechanical stuff you should be able to do it. I haven't seen any instrucitons out there that people have posted about doing this. Most people just show the finished work.

very good with electrical and with a wiring schematic, i can wire anything up. i just cant find the actual mpem. just searching for non dess mpem isnt getting me any results at all. is there any way you can narrow it down.. like.."go to this website and search for this exactly" or "call this store" its like finding a needle in a haystack. i started a new thread on here asking for one. hopefully ill get some hits
