Hi everyone, I have a 1996 seadoo gtx with the 787 motor. It runs great out of water but bogs down once it hits 5000 rpm in the water. Compression is 145psi and I have replaced the rectifier but nothing has changed. Anyone know what to check next? Thanks

Make sure it was rebuilt with genuine mikuni... Not cheap Amazon stuff. If it wasn't genuine mikuni, it won't run right and it'll probably burn up your engine. Just cleaning the carbs isn't good enough... at this age it needs a carb rebuild if it hasn't had one. What was your popoff pressure?

Some of the "genuine OEM" kits on Amazon aren't. Get the parts from a reputable dealer like osdparts.

After that, check and clean your rave valves. Make sure that they are clean and the black plastic caps that screw on to the rave valves are not stripped.

Next replace the o-ring in your water separator and check that the strainer in the water separator is clean. Remove any inline fuel filters that may have been added.

What speed are you hitting at 5k rpm? It should be 35-40 mph. Does pulling the choke a little make it run better or worse? You should check with the rpm gauge on the digital display--it can see minor rpm variations better than the analog dial.

Just went through this. New bellow (I guess it's technically a diaphragm) in water regulator and make sure your RAVE's are clean and are the updated slotted ones. I had a 'known good' water regulator that decided to break while I was jostling it around throwing it on the GTX to test and it threw me off. They do some goofy stuff.

Carbs were rebuilt last year with mikuni kits from osd. I also cleaned the raves while doing the gas lines this year. Pulling the choke just kills the engine. I’ll look into the water regulator today and try to clean it. Thanks for all the responses!

Fyi: The 1996 should work with slotted or non-slotted raves. 1997+ needs slotted as they narrowed the passage that the rave valve sits in.

Good to know.

I just make sure all my 787's have the slotted ones, who knows who has swapped what around in the last 20-25 years
