I know some of you guys have had these for a while. What's a decent mount besides the head strap? Is the suction cup mount that strong" I don't think I could use one without a safety tether.

Head strap will be most stable, but I've had good views from my chest mount I just got. It gives a cool view from the handlebars. Also get a suction mount, you can put it anywhere on the ski and can get a multitude of different angles. Just make sure to tether it so if it fails your gopro won't drop to the bottom of the lake.

The suction cup is by far the most stable and solid one unless you get the stick on mounts. It's strong enough to use as a grab handle to re board the ski if you want.

I used the suction mount for a bit, then switched to the 3m stick on mounts.

I tethered that, but after a while stopped tethering it because the 3m stuck so well.

Also had a screw in mount, looked similar to this, but never installed it, still have two of them.

Currently I'm using the ram mount on my handlebars, which IMO is the most secure of all, the downside is it only show's whats in front of you.

here's a pic of dual ram mounts, which is how I have it set up now... Left mount holds gps, right mount holds phone (navigation) but can be swapped to the gopro in about 15 seconds.

side view, what I like about the RAM is that you can change the position to suit your needs, and if you have a mount installed on more than one ski, we had 4 ski's and we all had the same mount, then you can swap the camera from one ski to the next in seconds.

I typically ride with gps/gopro mounted and the phone in the glove box, and swap out if I feel the need, and when I'm ideling, or even just going slow, I can remove the ram connector with my left hand and remove the gopro for handheld use, when I want to speed up and need both hands I can just pop the gopro back in the glove box or shove it inside my life jacket for a few minutes.

the only downside i've found with handlebar mounts is the limited view it provides, generally produces what my wife considers extremely boring video's of tree's and water.

I have several spare mounts that I purchased over time, but they just sit in the box, if somebody is interested in a couple, I can hook you up pretty cheap.

Very cool, have some videos to show?

I purchased a RAM mount for my iphone (in waterproof case and floating life jacket) to use for charting and maps.

I haven't the balls to try it out yet, hitting wakes and skipping across white caps is pretty rough and I have a hard time trusting the suction mount.

I do have the "floaty back door" but it doesn't have enough buoyancy to keep a camera and suction cup mount afloat.

What is the purpose of the machined aluminum mounts? A permanent attachment to something? I really like bling it adds, but I am unsure of the purpose.

1) I probably have 120 GB of Video, all unedited and boring as hell, I find editing extremely difficult and time consuming, i usually just take still shots off the video and send them to my buddies, stash them on an extermal hard drive for one day when I get really really bored and have no other distractions.

2) The 3m mounts really hold on strong, I wouldn't fear them coming off, but like I said I tethered it for a few trips and after hitting big waves and it not coming off I stopped tethering out of laziness. I didn't have the same trust in the suction cup mount.

3) the aluminum mount you can bolt on, (designed for helmets ?) and its definitely not coming off then, but it was more of an impulse buy on ebay ($10 each) right after I got the gopro but since the 3m stuck so well, I never got around to using the bolt mounts, didn't see the need, but it eliminates any/all concerns about the mount coming off IMO.

I don't have the floaty door, but my buddy uses one, we never tossed it in the water to see if it would work :)

Personally I wouldn't suggest using the suction mount on anything but smooth water, I'd say the 3m, then the aluminum or ram mount makes the most sense, in order of "toughness", and you can buy the RAM gopro adapter pretty cheap on ebay or @ gpscity (that's where I bought my RAM stuff), and swap from the iphone to the gopro in seconds based on what you want to do at the time.

I've never tried a helmet/head/chest mount, but seems to me that the helmet/head would provide the best video in general, but would be annoying and cumbersome to wear on my regular rides.

I have worn the head strap quite a bit and it does get a little annoying after a while not to mention the weird tan lines if you keep it on for a longer period. It does however provide some nice POV shots.

I did this video with the surf mount (with included tether mount, front view) and the suction mount (rear view) both were tethered with the included black lines. haven't had to use it yet, but cheap insurance
