The non Duramax GM engines have a couple issues. The early ones had cooling issues, but I don't remember the year that they fixed it. I think it was late 90's, but do a google search on it.
Second, they had a problem with the crank position sensor. but it's easy to change.
third... they had problems with the injection controller. Some genius from GM decided to mount a computer on top of the engine where it soaks up all that heat, and fails. The fix is to buy one of the newer ones, with larger fins (for cooling) and relocate it. It's such a common thing to do... there is a kit with a bracket, and an extension wiring harness.
Other than that... they are good trucks.
So... as long as you don't get one of the early engine blocks... the other things are easy to address.
