Is it a good idea to "double up" when fitting gaskets to a 98 GTI? Ive had a few problems with alignment on the engine, got that sorted, and am now refitting new manifold to pipe. Any advice greatly appreciated. BTW- its the copper based silicon gasket maker I'm talking about.

I used the copper exaust gasket sealant when I put my 787's back together (between top end and exhaust manifold, and between exhaust manifold and tuned pipe). Just becareful not to go too crazy with your bead, there are water jackets in the tuned pipe and you don't want to be plugging them up!

He is in the UK. Although I think the proper gaskets are the way to go, no chance of the sealant spilling over a water hole.

Oh I use new gaskets, if you look at the manual it states to use new gaskets and the Copper gasket sealant in these locations.

Cheers!

I don't see that as a good idea, it won't seal right.

The whole idea of the copper sealant is to make a better seal. Ideally you put a layer of sealant between gasket and surface, then torque the fasteners to about 3/4 of their recommended torque specs. Let the sealant set, (takes about an hour or two) then fully torque to recommended spec. Nobody says you have to use it but it certainly makes a much better seal.

Gaskets are there to take up the slack from parts that do not seal in a perfect state. On very high horsepower big block motors, they don't have gaskets in some areas. They are machined to perfection and o-ringed.If you have to use 2 gaskets, fix the initial problem and save dramas later
