I bought this boat ('98 Sportster single Rotax) a few weeks ago. I knew it needed some work but I wasn't aware of this issue. When I got it home (without test drive supposedly it hadn't been used in a couple of years) I could smell gas but I didn't find any gas leaking.
I did find oil leaking from one of the tubes (the smaller one) from the reservoir. I finally solved that (I think) finding the tube was cracked at the connection to reservoir. I drained the reservoir, cut the end off & reattached it. I then had an appointment to have the seats recovered so I don't have the boat here now but I'm pretty sure I've fixed that issue. I didn't bother filling the reservoir.
What was apparent was when the oil reservoir was empty the gas smell disappeared. So that seems very strange to me. I don't know anything about the mechanical operation of this oil injection system but it seems the oil level/pressure in the reservoir is somehow causing the gas smell.
I hope that's not too confusing a story. I might be totally off on my hypothesis but that's why I'm here.
Any help &/or theory is greatly appreciated.
