Fuel Pump - 99 GTX RFI

Good evening agents!

Ok so I'm looking to replace the fuel pump. I have visited Griz's post called the RFI Spot. Lots of great info there, however, the replacement he mentions is a kit from Advanced Auto but includes parts that don't look anything like what I took out. And the pump recommendations from Herko are no longer available. Anyway, I'm trying to stick with the Bosch replacement but having trouble finding it. Your thought are appreciated. Here's mine:


Also - the grommet on the bottom is damaged so I'm trying to find that too. The kit I saw doesn't have it.


Finally, this little pronged ring was holding the grommet on until I ripped the grommet off - is there a tool to get that off? Not sure what to do but I guess I need it for the next pump and replacement grommet.

If you got a a new clip, crush it with pliers and the ears will bend, then you can slip it off. If you don't have a replacement, use and open end wrench and slip it above the ring and pry a bit, when there is enough room, put another wrench below the one you already have from the other side. Now you can pry them together. If you need more stroke, add another wrench when there is room..

i wonder why e herko stopped selling them? I looked, they still sell the fuel pressure regulators but no pumps. i will email him and ask why.

Ok now I'm confused - that's the one I saw but what's with all the other stuff with it (the rubber boot, the rubber hose, the hose clamps, big o-ring) - just toss it I guess? I have none of that in my setup. Also the bottom of the pump (the white part on the advanced auto version), where the rubber grommet goes on mine, looks totally different. Do you not need the grommet then with this one?

Also, I had emailed Herko and they told me they had no idea if they would ever stock them again but did not say why. I thought that was strange. Seems like they had the perfect kit.

the only part you would need from that kit is the pump itself, your harness should snap right in. you can get both airtex filters at advanced or autozone. i think the part no are listed in the fuel injection spot thread. as for the rubber grommet, i have no idea where you would get one? but you will need it, the one at advance is different as it fits a explorer but the pump is the same. i wonder if minnitonka4me has a junk fuel baffle he could rob one from and sell to you. wouldn't hurt to shoot him a pm.

Ok, got it, that makes more sense. By the way, Advance sells the pump for $88 and I just found the exact same one on Amazon for $56 - picture is identical. I will reach out to tonka to see about a grommet, that's a great idea. Post up if you ever hear back from Herko. Thanks for the help!!

Ok so I found something very interesting today and I figured I'd post it in case it helps anyone out.

Searching high and low the last few days, I've been looking for the little black rubber grommet which attaches to the bottom of the pump and then you press the internal strainer into it. It doesn't come with replacement pumps and There are no known part numbers for it. A good suggestion was to see if you could maybe find a bad module for parts.

Anyway after working with a good dude at my local autozone we came up with this from Delphi:


The cool thing is that it includes both strainers AND the grommet!!!! Here's a side by side (plus the grommet)


And here's the BEST part - only $9.99 for the entire kit!!

Hope it helps someone - seems to me even if you don't need the grommet it's only 9.99 for both filters.

Funny, I looked that one first as Griz400 had also mentioned it in his RFI Spot post. And it's a great deal with the strainers at $59. I didn't get it for 2 reasons: a) I wanted to stay with a Bosch pump and 2) I needed a new rubber grommet for the bottom, which holds the internal strainer - mistakenly I had thought a new Bosch pump would come with this grommet, which of course it doesn't. But it gets better...

So I was happy to find this kit at Autozone for $9.99 with the grommet and strainers, except for one problem - the replacement Bosch pump that I bought, which is the Bosch replacement for mine, part# 69223, has a different bottom on it. I don't have a pic handy but if you type it into google or ebay you'll find it - it has a fixed white plastic piece in the place where the grommet would go. This means you can't use the internal strainer because it doesn't fit - I tried. However, if you were to look into the bottom of this fixed white plastic piece, that little circular part that hangs down (the fuel pickup, where the strainer would normally fit) has a little 'permanent' screen inside of it. This leads me to believe that this replacement Bosch pump, with it's built in permanent screen, no longer needs the internal strainer.

I would love to hear thoughts on this before I put it in. I found it odd that I haven't found a thread that talks about this given that this Bosch pump seems to be the one folks are using. I thought about not using it and purchasing that pump kit from High Flow since it's the old 'familiar' configuration but that seems silly if my thoughts on the new Bosch pump are accurate.

What do you think? And has anyone actually used this 69223 pump from Bosch? If so, you would have faced the same idea of not needing the internal strainer, since it doesn't fit.

Hey gents - any thoughts on my fuel pump situation from my post above #16? Here are the two pumps side by side, old one on right, with grommet and strainer, new one on right with a photo of the permanent screen looking up from bottom:



FWIW here's the box the new pump came in:


Just want to see what the thoughts are before I install this seemingly new configuration. Basically the 'new' or 'updated' config on this new pump makes the internal strainer unnecessary since it doesn't fit anyway.

Isn't there another sock on the outside of the canister as with a DI fuel pump? If so, then I wouldn't worry about it. You also have an inline fuel filter, as well so there is plenty of protection. I would assemble and go have fun.

there is no other filters. just the 2 that is with the fuel pump assy. kinda strange the redesigned it. not sure if it would be a good idea or not,

Yes there is another on the outside bottom of the module - I think you're right - between that one and the screen they added to the pump perhaps I am overthinking it.

no inline filter (that I'm aware of) but the strainer/sock on the bottom of the module, then the screen on the actual pump itself. I could always add an inline I suppose.

FWIW if you are thinking of adding an inline filter I would go with a high flow metal canister filter and not the plastic kind.
This is what I use on my DI's instead of the very expensive OEM ones.

I'll check it out, thx! In the end, I guess I have to decide if it's necessary. I mean Bosch made the newer pumps with the screen built in, so it's not like there's nothing there - I assume they thought that through when they engineered it. Plus, I still have the external strainer, so the fuel is still passing through 2 different filters. I'm surprised no one has used this particular pump - or they're not chiming in. Like I said, probably overthinking it.

By the way, how often do you change that inline filter?

Ok, well FWIW, I cannot use this Bosch 69223 for two reasons - a) Bosch says this pump won't push the 56-60psi necessary (69498 does) and b) it simply does not sit right in the bottom of the module. Of course, I feel like an idiot for not trying this first.

So after further research, looks like I can get one of the cheap-o kits off ebay or the following will work (but they ain't cheap):

1) Bosch 69498
2) Walbro (they have an RFI specific kit)
3) Delphi FG0503
4) Denso 951-0009

Ugggh - this due diligence took way longer than I thought it would. I will post up when I have decided what to do. Of course, if anyone has any other thoughts, I'd love to hear it.
