Not the ladder, the engine itself sounds like it's running good, the noise is from the lower end. And it might just be my imagination but it sounded quieter today, I don't have the best hearing though.

I was given the same line everyone hears when I got it, "ran great last time out".

Could sitting on a lift, out of water for 3 years cause a bearing in the pump to go bad? Maybe that's what I need to look at? When I crawled under and looked up through the grate I can see one of the blades on the impeller is somewhat chewed on a tail end. It's straight, but not perfect.

I wonder if a new wear ring, pump and stator oil would be all it needs.

I cant figure this clunking noise out. It doesn't sound like it's from the impeller but it does sound like it's somewhere up underneath in the pump section it sounds like a metal grate clanging around.

sorry I missed your last post.

Yes... sitting on the lift for years could kill the bearing... assuming that there was water in the gearbox.

I guess I would:

1) Drain the gear oil, and make sure it's clean. Even if it's already been done... if there is a mechanical issue... then you will see it in the oil.

2) Pull out all 6 sparkplugs, and turn the engine over by hand. (on the trailer/out of the water) Then... listen to the gears... and feel for a rough gearbox.

Dr Honda, what weight gear oil do you recommend, the service manual notes Quicksilver Hi Performance but no mention of weight

Thanks

Quicksilver High performance.

OK... I'm not a fan on using the OEM oils most of the time. But... the sportjet is a special case. The gearbox puts more sheer on the oil than a normal Outboard... and if you get any water intrusion, the Quicksilver will keep it suspended, but allow the oil to still protect the gears. A standard gear lube wont. Also... it's additive package is so different, it warns to not mix it with other gear lube. (including Quicksilver Premium)

But... if we are only talking "Weight"... then it's a 90 SAE.

Thanks, I intended to use the Quicksilver brand I usually look things up online before i go shopping, so I know what the "packaging" looks like and don't spend 20 minutes hunting something I've never seen before.

When I looked it up I saw a few different labels and wanted to be sure.

I opened the drain and vent screws today and the little that dripped didn't contain any metal material, but I'll get it all out and see in the next day or so.

I read a thread where you mentioned using a tube and blowing into the vent to generate drainage from the fill/drain screw so I'll give it a go.

Yep... sometimes it hangs in the gear case. A little pressure will get it to start to flow. AND... since it's thick... after it stops flowing... let it drip for a few minutes.
