fuel lines from baffle

As I was taking lines off one by one and replacing the lines (discarding gray lines and switching to black) another line popped off and I couldn't see in time where it came from. Does anyone have a picture or can explain which lines go where from the fuel baffle? The manual doesn't show very well.

Things I have figured out...

I have the lines ran from the fuel shut off valve to the baffle but it was a mystery of the other two...One goes to the carb I believe and the other goes...somewhere...

If you look real close at the top of the baffle you will see the small letters marking each one.

This should help:

another question

While replacing the lines it seemed very difficult to replace the line from the baffle to the side of the hull. I assume since this line is not a "fuel" line that it would be okay to leave it; would I be wrong?

That one is the vent - not critical to replace that hose. But make sure the check valves there work correctly (air flow goes one way but not the other).

Nate (a junior immature boat mechanic) speaks:

Why bother cleaning up all the goop from the fuel lines, and carbs, and then LEAVE any source for more of that goop.

It took me ALL day to clean my carb filter. I used (from memory) Silicone spray, brake parts cleaner, carb spray cleaner, Ultra sonic jewelry cleaner, with vinegar, and finally got it perdy and white.

My point is that I hated what the gray lines did to me so much, that as a matter of principal, I changed all the lines. I somehow think that as the gray lines get OLDER, that they disintegrate faster. And, just a good load of glue from a vent line could partially clog things, and cause a lean engine condition, and so with all things considered, you MIGHT get away with it, and you might not.

Err on the side of caution, and throw those gray lines as far as you can!

My 2 cents.

Nate

I agree with you Nate...I leave no stone unturned when I do things, but some people want to cut corners, and save a few pennies and 15 minutes of time.

Okay you win, I'll stop trying to cut corners :) I've got all week to get things right anyways.

These fuel lines, they were fine when the boat was new, but break down inside now. That is classic for E-10 ethanol fuel in a non ethanol safe fuel system. So I'm not so sure what you all say about the ethanol thing being a hoax.

At least all that needed to be changed was the hoses and there weren't any seals in the carbs or in the engine that break down with the ethanol present.

Seadoo had problems with the gray fuel lines in the late 90's. Nobody every really took the time to tell the owners to replace them. Seadoo's are ok to run on 10% ethanol, here is their recomendations on fuel and oil, directly;

Use High quality low ASH API TC Injector oil.
Do Not use NMMA TC-W, TC-W2 or TC-W3 outboard motor oils or other ash less type 2 cycle oil. Avoid mixing different brands of API TC oil as resulting chemical reaction will cause severe engine damage. Never mix Mineral or synthetics oil together.

Never use fuel containing more than 10 % alcohol,( Methanol or Ethanol) as severe damage will occur. The minimum of 87 octane is recommended for most engines.

ethanol IS a hoax! it is a political reaming put to the american public so rich farmers and oil company types can get richer. it takes almost a gallon of dead dinosaurs to refine a gallon of ethanol out of corn. there are SO many things that were fine with gasoline (like the fiberglass fuel tanks in my hatteras) and so many more things that are SUPPOSED to be ok with ethanol! these fuel lines among the latter.

So *that's* what you meant by hoax. Yes, ethanol is a complete waste of money and time. MTBE is really bad for the environment, but replacing it with ethanol didn't do anything but drive up the cost of corn and cause expense and headaches for old car/boat/truck/etc owners.
