normally the float in the sender will go bad. But if you are saying... the system is still working... and the light/alarm will come on, when the fuel is actually low..... then I'd say you have a bad gauge.

It could be as simple as a loose connection as well. There is a water tight three pin connector at the sender you should check, and check the connection at the gauge.
