Fuel Gauge Always Showing FULL

I have a 2006 Sportster 4-tech 215 HP. My problem is that the fuel gauge is always showing "full" when it is not. Is frozen in the "full" position. This is a little different situation than explained in here before, where shows empty when the tank is full. So some of you in here disconnect the gauge from the baffle, short the gauge with a wire and if the needle moves to full the gauge is in working condition, the problem is the baffle. By reading those posts in here I'm assuming that my problem is the gauge and not the baffle. Am I correct or not? Or should I disconnect the gauge from the baffle first, to see if it ramains frozen in the "full" position? I like to know before I spend the money on getting a new gauge. Please let me know.

Could be the float in the baffel is stuck in the up position or gauge is stuck. I have had on two skis the blown baffel fuse causing gauge to read empty and used the short with wire trick as a temporary fix. I would think unplugging baffel would cause gauge to read empty.

Zonic2001 - I am having the same exact problem on my 2005 Sportster. I will followup here if I find anything interesting.

I look at finding the baffle but is under the seats. Took one of the three seat covers out where I thought the baffle should be and the fiberglass covers the area.... how do I remove the baffle? Can't take it out from the engine compartment because I have to take the engine off first. Can't take it out anywhere else because there is boat fiberglass covering it. How is done?

You may have to look at service manual to see how it's done or wait for advice from someone familiar with your model. On my PWC's I had to pull gas tank up and forward into front storage compartment and remove steering assembly, a bit complicated to replace faulty baffel. On my challenger there was nothing blocking access so it was easy to replace leaking float.

I believe what you are looking for is under the center seat. Pull (yank) up and forward holding the back of the seat cusion. There you will find a circular cover. Twist off the cover for access to the gas tank and I believe the float etc...
You might need to buy a couple of plastic zip screw things (don't know what they are called). These are what hold the seat cusion down when you reinstall the cusion. You might be ok if you only remove the seat cusion once or twice.

Hi Guys

My 2006 Challenger 180 analog fuel gauge is stuck on full too. I have removed the fuel gauge and its always on full.

My understanding is the older analog fuel gauge reads empty at high impedance 900 ohms and Full at low impendace short circuit.

I think I need a new gauge ?

Michael

I can't speak to your make and model specifically, but on most if you unplug the gauge at the baffle and then power up the electrical the fuel gauge should drop to EMPTY. If you then jumper the unplugged baffle the gauge will return to full. On the older Seadoo's the baffle should have approx 90 ohms at empty and close to 0 when full. If you measure your baffle and it anything above zero then it's a pretty good bet the problem is your gauge.

Thanks, Yes if I short my gauges terminals the gauge is stuck on FULL, I can never get it to go to empty.

Where is a good place to buy parts online ?

Does anybody have a fix for the "always on full" fuel gauge? I don't really want to buy a new one, so if there is not some fix I can do, I'll just open the storage compartment and look to see how much fuel I have.
