Hope the pic worked.

I'm looking for an affordable Wake. Not easy to do where I am (Alberta).
I found this 06

Nice that it comes with a little waverunner.

He was honest enough to send me a pic of the ding and tell me that the last tire kicker thinks it needs a new wear ring. He's willing to come down to 6k to cover some of the repair costs. He says the ding doesn't let in water. Looks iffy to me.

How bad could this damage be? Slap on some bondo and paint and hope for the best?

If it doesn't reach 50-55 at 7200-7300 rpm, could it be just the wear ring? How could I tell if it's more than that?

It's a road trip to have a look so I want to have all my ducks in a row first.

Thanks for the help

That appears to be on the front. If so, as long as it isn't soaked through with water from prior use, it would be a fairly easy fix. There are videos on Youtube on how to do fiberglass repair that are pretty thorough.

As far as the wear ring, either that or a damaged impeller can stop it from reaching top speed. Any cavitation/vibration issues or damage underneath to the hull? Also, just needing a tuneup could fix it. Last week I had a friend tell me he was going to sell his 2008 RXP-X 215HP because it wouldn't get past 6500rpm and it was smoking. He said the S/C has been rebuilt the previous year, so I didn't suspect that. I changed the oil and plugs and now it runs just like it used to. And he was willing to let it go for $2500 because he had spent over $1000 having the S/C rebuilt and new impeller installed. He's lucky he's a friend. Otherwise, I'd of just bought it, tuned it up and kept it!

Thanks for the info. You sound like a good friend to have!

If the RPMs and MPH check out would you still do a compression check?

Bondo/Fiberglas and Youtube will be my friends.

Personally, I would. It can be an early indicator of impending issues just like with a car. My experience is more with boats and a lot of cars as well as 20+ years in Aviation mechanics.

There are specific things you need to do to disable fuel flow and you also need a specific adapter for the compression gauge. Someone with more knowledge can jump in here. Personally, any more than a 15psi loss across cylinders would make me walk away from a car engine. Someone who knows more than I can help you out here. CoastieJoe seems to know his stuff.

Thanks. I'll do a compression too. Can't hurt.

I watched a YouTube of a guy doing a compression test. He put it into "Drown" mode by holding the throttle open before and during cranking. Was a different year Wake though and an SC. Works for all?

He did the test with all the plugs out at once. Any difference doing it this way or taking them out one at a time?

I saw he had a hose that attached to the gauge. I'd this something special or available at any auto store?

You want all the plugs out when doing a compression check and the throttle butterfly needs to be kept wide open (with fly by wire just holding the throttle in the flood position may not actually open the butterfly, maybe someone else knows about that). You will also want to ground all the plug wires to the block, easiest to do with the plugs back in the wires.

Above info is all good,,

Don't let the wear ring (potential) problem scare you. Even if it isn't the wear ring, it would likely be the Carbon Seal next. A bit of a pain to change, but again, really not an issue.

If you don't like the "ding" you can order a "Gel Coat Patch" that is the same color, or hit a local auto shop and let them repair it. This way it is nice and new for you.

Or,, seal it with ANY quality paint and put a Sticker on it,,,

Just found out the seller had pre sale regret and has decided to keep the skis. Too bad.

Thanks for all the time and info. I'm all set when I find another.
