I thought I would start a thread to try to make this forum a better place and still be a fun place.

I'm going to start this thread by posting a couple of my pet peeves and I hope others will also post theirs.

1. Unnecessary posts, there are too many times when there are posts made that are not helpful if you don't know or are not reasonably certain of the answer just don't post. I sometimes think some people on this forum post for no reason, if you have no experience with the problem, that's O.K., I know that I'm just a shade tree mechanic, so the real difficult question I leave for the experts. If you have no knowledge or hands on experience please don't post.

2. Joking around and humor when not appropriate. I know I have been guilty of this myself. I think this should be kept to a minimum especially in the tech. forums, until at least after the problem is solved. The guy that has started the thread probably doesn't think its very funny, put yourself in his place.

I think sometimes a little humor can actually keep a thread moving but let's use it in moderation and especially don't beat it into the ground. That's what the ask Jake & Lou forum is for, so lets channel the humor there, or start your own thread.

Most guys on this forum are very respectful of others and others feelings but there are a few that aren't. Lets try to make this forum an informative but also a fun place.

Please make any comments and feedback you want and especially suggestions.

Grammar. Punctuation in particular is hard to come by in online forums I've noticed. A period is your friend and makes your post that much easier to understand so people can actually help you.

Lou, great thread.

Carguy, excellent point about grammar and punctuation. For example:

"Punctuation, in particular, is hard to come by in online forums, I've noticed. A period is your friend, and makes your post that much easier to understand so people can actually help you."

is much easier to read with the punctuation added. - just sayin. :)

Seriously though, there was one post a few months ago that was one run-on sentence, ten lines long, with NO punctuation. I read it six time and had no idea what the question was. (Please excuse the dangling participle)

I was curious to see how long it would take before someone would catch on.

Hijacking threads is another Etiquette violation.

For example, if I was to respond to Carguy and say "Good one. I figured you intentionally left the punctuation out to illustrate your point".
That would be drawing the thread off topic and the thread would be considered hijacked. So don't do that.

Another pet peeve of mine is Spelling.
This site has spell check, at least I do and I use Firefox. Please note the difference between "no & know", "their (possessive) & there (a place)", "then & than" and the worse is UR, does this mean you are, you're or your (or your choice...lol...:)..).
I understand that spell check is not perfect. It doesn't know if you want to use "no" or "know", it just knows that it's spelled correctly.

I'm sure there are many other examples.

I hate when someone asks questions that have already been answered in a thread. Try to read the thread from the beginning if you want to add a comment. If you are adding post #15 to a thread...it helps if you know what was going on in posts 1-14.

Iám guilty of probably all of the above.BUT.If I answer a tech question,I will answer with what I DO KNOW(or is that no)E.G.If someone wants to no(or is that know)how to remove the head off a motor, don't answer with'Well.Remove the seat and look inside.I am sure the experts will chime in with more info."That is a waste of time.
You all have a nice day:)

I think the highjacking/off topic discussions probably the worst offenses lately.

I can deal with the rest.

Gotta love the internet.

Bad advice is worse than no advice, at least with no advice it's not going to cost anyone time or money. Bad advice will.

One other thing comes to mind, asking how much it costs, it the guy wants you to know he'll tell you with out asking. I will usually offer how much I paid if I got a good deal, if I was suckered I wont, just human nature.

One more to add to the list - incomplete threads. If you asked a question and it got answered, post up and let us know if the suggestion worked. One thing I noticed after joining was that there was a lot of unfinished threads. Kind of makes the search function useless if there's no closure to the problem.

Glad you brought this up, it totally slipped my mind. It probably is my biggest complaint really.
