I filled mine several years ago up to and including water in the cylinders. cranked all the water out and it ran but kept stalling. Finally opened the electric box and it too was full. I drained it and sprayed dry with compressed air it has run fine since.. best of luck

Thanks for the help everyone.

Took it to a boat repair shop. Mechanic said it's most likely the starter and quoted me a price of $220 to fix it.

Unless you enjoy cursing, skinning your knuckles and standing on your head DO NOT BUY A $50.00 STARTER. Because next week you will be installing another one. The best thing to do is rebuild the starter that you have, or buy an OEM (very expensive). Or buy one from a reputable supplier, I bought one from Overton's (Arrow Brand).

$220.00 from the dealer sounds pretty good, just make sure that they are using a quality starter, they are very hard to change because you really can't see what you are doing, the starter is kinda behind the exhaust manifold on the port side of the ski, very hard to get to.

Thanks for the info Lou.

There is a place in town that will rebuild them for $50. What do you think of that price? Fair?

Also, do you have to take the engine out to replace the starter? How do I tell if a fuse is blown?

BTW< you've been hugely helpful.

Thanks for the compliment, I'm not a professional, just a shade tree mechanic.

$50.00 to rebuild your old starter is a great price, the parts alone are about $30.00.

You are going to have to pull the fuse out, they're automotive type, you can visually see if the filament is broken, or you can check with an ohm meter.

I did my research before I bought my stater, I am not naive. The company gets very good reviews. It was a rebuilt so it brought the price down.

It was fairly easy to replace mine on my 96 GTI, you have one so you should know. Just four bolts and a nut. Didn't even have to pull the pipe just needed some extensions.

Sorry, I didn't mean to start anything, I thought you had purchased a $50.00 starter on EBay. I confess that I have not changed the starter on my GTI, I did on my 96XP it was real tight, it has a 787 and is a much smaller ski.

No I would never use eBay to buy automative/marine parts. I would not want to change the starter on my 99 gtx. It is a bigger ski, with a bigger and much heavier engine. I have pulled the 717 a few times and that is not bad but I hope I don't need to pull the 951 in my 99 gtx anytime.

HUGE thanks to everyone who helped me in this thread, especially Lou who spent a lot of time helping me out.

Got the starter fixed for $150 from a local alternator and starter company. Starts up great now.

Great, I'm glad everything worked out and that's all it was. To tell you the truth I was afraid that you had fried the mpem (big bucks). If we can be of help in the future please don't hesitate to ask.
