Force to move impeller

I have pulled the engine from my '94 spx and find it difficult to spin the impeller. It will move with a pair of pliers on the spindle, but not by hand. The manual does not indicate force required to turn the shaft. The wear ring appears to be ok, but I may remove it for shaft inspection and replace the wear ring to be safe. Please advise.

No Force!....

No, there should be no resistance at all in spining your impellor. Inspect the impeller to see if it's rubbing up against the wearing ring. Then, on the end of the pump, you'll see the nose cone. Take out that allen head plug and check the oil in it. It's suppose to have 75-90 w synthetic oil in it. If it's a yellowish color, it has water in it. If you don't see any oil, take the three fasteners off that cone and remove it. This is where you'll find your 2 journal bearings and one thrust washer bearing. The cone has a spring in it to provide some tension. From the sound of it, your bearings are shot!....if so, let me know. You can replace them with only a couple tools. You won't need to buy all that extra stuff they tell you your gonna need.
Let me know what you find out!....
Replace the wearing ring if you want to......but I'd inspect it first and do a clearance check on the impeller before deciding to replace. If your impeller is in bad shape, you can send it out as a core exchange for another one for about $25 bucks..........

Parts....

When you open the cap, if it's obvious that your going to replace your bearings, the only special tool you need to get is the impellor removal tool, unless you have a spare splined shaft layin around somewhere you can use to hold it while your breaking the threads on it............
Let me know. I've pulled mine so much, I can do it blindfolded!.......

I am glad to hear you are very good at this seadoosnipe because I may be asking questions as I need to see if mine is in good shape but please not right now as i may forget and I have a few other things I am working on now but it wont be long

That's cool!....

It may sound intimadating at first, but when you get into it, it's really quite easy.
You just let me know when, I'm there for ya!........

I think Louis has done this proceedure so many times he can do it blindfolded...I think he practices in his spear time to keep from being bored. lol

..........good!...

Oh, your so funny..........although, when I get bored, come to think of it, I do go out there and tear something apart.
When I was little, I used to tear everything apart. 99.9% of the time, it never worked again. Now, I believe my percentage has gotten better...

yes I do remimber those days about 30 years ago as it seemed like I was pushing my toys more than I was riding them. it took a few years for the table to turn.

I never had those problems...I took my dads new lawn mower apart at age 8 and he was so Pi**ed off he told me it better run when I put it back together or else...I worked on it for 2 days and it ran ...we kept that mower for like 5 more years...I had to change the oil every year as punishment.

If I couldn't fix stuff I owned. I would have nothing.

Its not that I go outa my way to break stuff ( well I try somtimes) but fixing or making something go that little bit better is what its all about.

Ive taken an impeller off with a vice gripping the flat shaft end, and a piece of softwood to hit with my large knocking stick before.
Anti clockwise I think.

help

I don't suppose anyone can really answer this question without running my waverunner, but I let someone ride my new purchase and they forgot to pull up the rope ...so yes it got sucked in and it didn't want to start or run. However, he advised me that it was bogging down before the rope was sucked in. I was able to stick my petite little hands up the intake valve(yes Im female) and eventually free the rope holding my breath for minutes at a time. It did start and to make a long story short didn't want to go anywhere (engine reves up ,idle goes high) other than idle (forward) which still moved the boat back to shore. Later that day after inspection it was clear to me that the shaft was turning, but the impellar wasn't. There was a 1 cm piece of bark stuck in the blade and wedged up against the housing. Once I freed it the impellar started turning again and I used it today. On 2 different occassions it started doing the same thing High rpms but no forward motion. It came out of it both times.....do i have a bad impellar or are the bearings ?? shot ...any ideas....help I am a veterinarian and a do it yourself kinda person. Can I fix this myself...fairly mechanically inclined. ??

squealing impeller

Well Kim, I don't have an answer for your impeller issue. It may be a partially stripped shaft or impeller. I would also look at the wear ring to see if it is out of spec.

I have another problem, yeah!:( I was running along the lake yesterday and there was a loud squeal that began to come out of the unit. Just before I got it to shore, it died and wouldn't turn over. I did start again but squealed when accelerating. I am afraid I sucked in a rock as the engine is ok. I need to check the timing, but I think something went wrong with the impeller. Any ideas?

Did you look in the jet pump? You did add the oil in the nose cone till it was full right?

Karl

jet unit

Hi KIM.. unforunately sounds like you've got some damage to your jet pump unit. If it were me i would take it apart and recheck everything.. becoming a premium member allows you access to the seadoo manuals to give you a step by step instruction of how its done.. what tools you will need.. and save you some $$$ in labour costs. Or get a dealer to do it for you... whichever way... get it checked. There are heaps of friendly people in this forum just itching to give advice on anything you get stuck on. Let us know how you went.

Oil

Karl,

Yes, I did fill it until it was full. I put in the "official" sea doo lube in the cone and in the bearing assembly. (from the dealership) :ack:

I will take it apart this week, and in all likelyhood, place an order at SBT. :(

Water?!?!

Well, I opened the cone to find it filled with water and a long, thin piece of metal hanging out of the thrust washer/bearing interface. Not to mention the tell tale pile of fine shavings in the cone. I checked the assembly when it was built and filled it with the correct lube. Any ideas what I may have done wrong?

I pinched my thrust bearing in the grove of shaft the first time I did mine as I did not know beter. When I did this it spun very hard for about 1/2 turn then I guess it freed it self and spon easy I knew this was not right so I did some research and found what I did and also found out that if I ran it this way it may fail very soon. I do not know if this hapened to you. good luck Robin
