Exhaust Sealant or new gasket?

I loosened the hex bolts on exhaust manifold, not removing the bottom bottom bolt that requires the special tool. I now have a water leak. Should I buy ultra copper gasket sealant or just buy a new gasket?

I vote for a new gasket, some say even the bolts and washers should be new and over torquing will guarantee it leaks, so torque to spec given in shop manual and use the specified thread locker or suffer the associated bag of consequences first then do it all again the right way.

I have yet to remove mine, why did you remove yours?

:agree:
I have tried reusing that gasket a couple of times and both times it leaked. The gaskets looked to be in good shape cause they weren't that old but it still leaked. Not saying it wont work with a little sealant but to me not worth the risk.

As Sportster mentioned torque all the exhaust bolts in sequence including the ring clamp and the rubber bumpers with the shim in them. Kinda like bolting on a rim on a car.

Understood. I was removing the carbs to rebuild them, uneducated, I loosened the hex bolts to try to remove head pipe to get better view of the carbs. It did no good and now I am finding myself replacing the gasket as well!!

Oh yeah, right, I can see how you might've been sucked into that optical illusion.

Like someone once said, the best way to tell between a male zebra from a female zebra is, male zebras are black with white stripes and the females are white with black stripes.

BTW, don't forget to confirm the oil pump lever-arm alignment is CORRECTLY POSITIONED, after each time messing with the throttle cable and idle adjustment.

Even if you were going to sealant you would have to remove the manifold to do it right.

As such, go for new.

It is said, a little sealant goes a long ways, a lot of sealant destroys engines,,,

You will have to fully remove that pipe now to do this right...

The gasket goes around that post and you will need to clean the mating surfaces.

Yup what Sqrl said. The gasket is going to have to go over that bolt. The pipe is going to have to come out. You need very clean surfaces to seal up right. Good luck!!
