Ever heard of a ski doing this??

Rode it for awhile today....then when we where all done, I started it on the trailer to clear out the water.....and started right up...then the RPMS went to max, I pulled the lanyard hit the button and tried everything, in a complete panic, and it would not shut off...kept messing around plugging it back in unplugging it...at some point some how it shut off. I told Capt Scale what happened, and he came over to the ski, and I started it again, and the same thing happened....So all the way home I was scared to flush it. But when I got home everything went fine........ Any ideas???:o
 
I have heard of them racing off like that. Next time pull the choke all the way out and it will kill it.
 
We had a machine that had a loose intake and as soon as it started it wanted to tear off like mad.

Also a severe lean condition can cause dieseling.

Check your throttle cable for free movement at all steering angles.
? Im sure others will have ideas.
 
I pulled the choke, and nothing. Also throttle was closed...I kept mashing it to see if it was stuck. This is on the 98 GSX limited BTW!! Is there a way to stop the motor when all this happens without pulling the spark plugs and getting the crap shocked out of ya?
 
gotta airleak

need to pull the choke, and keep it pulled, til motor craps out, or if yuo got a primer kit, keep priming til she floods.
 
How long did it run before shutting off?

From what I have read, if your engine is cool, you should be ok. But an engine that is warmed up, hot spots in the cylinders is what is causing the ignition...not your spark plugs, so pulling the wires is not going to help.

With a cool engine, try spraying starter fluid around your gaskets to see if it makes your engine speed up. This will help you locate any air leaks you may have.

You could also look to performing a leak down test.
 
The previous owner said the fuel selector does not work, and on my way into the dock I turned it to off, just messing around while in the long no wake zone... I never turned it back to on...could the selector actually work partially and that was the cause? when I was at home I put it in the on position, when flushing.....and it ran normal.....wonder if I might be on to somthing. I did notice a primer ball in the front behind the sorage bin...is this factory? If I squeeze the crap out of that will that help the situation if it happens again?
 
Yes, I believe it could. But maybe not in the way you thought. The condition comes from when you are running too lean. Without adequate fuel coming to the carbs, your engine raced off.

I don't believe it is factory. Our ski's are only 0.5 years apart, but almost all is identical and I do not have it, nor have I seen anywhere in the 98 manual that refers to it.

If it is in fact a primer, you would most likely help your engine by flooding it in that condition. There seems to be a great debate as to what is better for a dieseling engine. Wide-Open Throttle vs. pulling the Choke. Both sides of the argument have many people claiming that it has worked for them. Both have the similar effect of trying to richen the mixture that is burning.

Also, since you had the gas shut off, I assume that what finally killed the engine was not being able to suck any more gas into the cylinders.

Most likely the hot-spots in your engine that are providing the spark are a build up of carbon deposits. You should probably run a cleaner like SeaFoam through your engine to help remove some of this.
 
Yeah, I hear ya. I would be too.

Definitely go to an auto parts store and buy a good decarbonizer and add it to your gas. I mentioned SeaFoam, it seems to work pretty well. Just read the label and make sure whatever you buy is appropriate for your 2-stroke.

Then at least you will have cut down/eliminated those potential "hot spots".
 
WOW!:o thats crazy

Yeah it's crazy alright mine just did this and several tried later and I was shaking like I saw the grim reaper coming to get me. This will scare the hell out of you and even worse mine is doing this with a new rebuild before I even had a chance to break it in!
