Engines Die Suddenly

Had my 97 Speedster out for the first time today. About 2-3 minutes into getting up on plane and running about 5500 rpm, the engines suddenly shut off as if the kill switch had been pressed. Put in neutral and it wouldn't turn over. Pulled the lanyard off and back on and it started right up. A little puzzling, but it seemed to run fine until I slowed to idle the next time when it shut off again as if the lanyard had been pulled off. Removed and replaced the lanyard and it started right up.

It did this about 10 times in about 2 hours on the water. Twice while running on plane and the rest while idling or just above idle through a no wake zone.

What do I need to check first? Last July, the engine compartment flooded and one engine became hydralocked when I tried to start it. I was able to save the engine, thanks to this forum where I had read and remembered what to do. It ran fine the rest of last summer, but today it just kept suddenly dying. This is the first time I've experienced this since buying the boat 3 years ago. Could something have gotten wet then that might be causing this now?

Hopefully, it is just something easy like cleaning some corroded connections.

Thanx for your help!

well if it isn`t something like a lean seizure happening it could be just the Dess key and or post...
I had a GTX sc do the same thing, replaced dess post and new key and done...

do a compression test to make sure the engine isn`t killing itself...

How much for the DESS post and key? Since both engines die at exactly the same time, I tend to think the spark is being shut off to both engines simultaneously. I thought about spraying some contact spray on the post and key to see if it might have just enough corrosion to cause an intermittent problem. Cleaning it might do the trick. What say you?

ok, it`s shutting down both, it very well could be the dess post and key.

I`m pretty sure you need a programmer (candoo) or the B.U.D.S. system (dealer) to program a new key.

you could try cleaning it and see what happens...
