Engine Vibration - Not Motor Mounts

Hello Guys,

I just got a 1996 SPX from my uncle that has been sitting for a few years. It was used once last year but would not throttle up.

I cleaned the carbs and replaced the fuel lines last night (they were pretty icky).

My question is about the motor though. Before I cleaned the carbs, it would start and run very rough. The engine shakes.

I noticed that the motor mounts are in good shape, the bolts holding the motor down to the metal cross pieces are where the vibration is coming from.

How can I tighten these bolts? Do I have to take the whole engine out? Can I prop up the engine without damaging the drive shaft/pump if I do not unhook it?

If I have to unhook the drive shaft, what all do I need to take off?

Thanks,

Jeremy

Jeremy...pull the motor by the pipe, see if it lifts on its own. If does, the nyou can prop the motor side to side, to get to the mounts and replace them.

Timmy,

The motor mounts are in good shape. The engine rocks back and forth where it connects to the metal cross bars. (There are 4 mounts and two metal pieces going under the engine that hook up to each mount)

When the engine shake, the metal pieces/mounts all stay in place, I believe it is 4 bolts underneath the metal mounts that bolt UP TO the engine.

Thanks,

Jeremy

ok...if you cant get hand underthere, to see/feel that they backed out, then yeah, undo the bolts that hold cradle to mount, and lift side to side...should get enuf clearance to tighten them.

You sure this wont damage the drive shaft or pump seal? That's really my main worry...

nah...your just rotating the motor, which will turn, cause its still in pto. Just replaced myt buddies mounts in 90sp
