Engine start issues

I have a 1996 seadoo speedster and my right engine will start fine where as my left engine will click when I push the starter but will not fire. Any idea on where I could start looking for issues would be helpful.

you are getting a signal to the solenoid, (if it clicks), so now take a screwdriver and jump solenoid, if it turns motor over, its the solenoid, if it doesnt and starter clicks, then id say a starter issue or the ground -- note -- you can always take a jumper cable like just the black cable, and go from battery negative to motor somewhere, and if it starts, its just a ground, maybe just needs cleaned

The solenoid sparked but I wasn't sure if I needed to crank the engine or not

There are two large terminals on the solenoid, use a heavy gauge piece of wire or screwdriver to jump them together and see if the starter begins to turn the engine. If yes, then the solenoid is the suspected gremlin. If not, could be negative battery cable to engine, or cable from solenoid to starter, these can become corroded over time and may need to be removed and cleaned with a wire brush, or the connecting nuts/bolts may have simply come lose.

If none of this helps, you may have a defective starter motor or even a dead battery.

Think in terms of a process of elimination, if not this then maybe something else such as....???

Solenoid sparks put in a new battery one engine fires right up the other still just clicks I cleaned everything is their anyway to check and or fix the starter without replacing it

I only have one battery is there any way to fix the starter without replacing it?

If you have a voltmeter, you can verify the DC voltage at the starter while someone presses the start button. If it goes to 12Volts and the starter doesn't turn the engine, then I'd have to say the starter is otast. Can you turn the motor by hand? It's possible your motor may be seized and the starter cannot turn it. First, confirm the motor isn't seized by confirming the PTO flywheel can be moved by hand, there could also be a problem with the jet pump, the bearings could be seized or a stick could be stuck inside, keeping your driveline from turning.

Check all of these items, before purchasing a replacement starter.

lets see, did both motors run before, or did you just buy boat and 1 wont start --- motor isnt locked up is it ???? can you turn it over by hand ????

Yes both motors were running less than 24 hrs before this issue started I found cleaned and jumped the solenoid got sparks but the engine never moved I can move it by hand however I'm thinking its something with the starter

If you can move the engine by hand, and you have confirmed the starter is receiving power from the solenoid(by measuring 12v at starter while someone pushes the start button), then it's either the starter motor itself or the starter bendix.

Looks like you're going to have to remove the starter and test it. I recommend you look over the assembly drawings so you'll know where the mounting bolts are, and get an idea of how the starter is mounted to the engine.

Whew, glad the motor spins freely. Pay close attention to how it comes apart so you can put it back together the way it's supposed to be and not create new problems in the process. Disconnect the battery ground terminal before digging in.

Scratch that I just went to check on the starter and the engine will not move it looks like there may be some blockage by the impeller but I will have to check tomorrow any thoughts on how to approach this issue?

Generally just crawl up underneath with a flashlight and inspect up inside the rock grate, look for the obvious. You may have to remove the rock grate bolts to reach up inside to remove any obstructions. It's also possible the pump bearings have frozen.

Did not read the entire post, just your last one.

Since you have a 2-stroke you can remove the plugs and turn the engine backwards if you find line wrapped up in the impeller area.

Yes, he means spark plugs. The reason for this is to relieve the piston compression through the spark plug holes, otherwise the engine will difficult to rotate through the compression stroke.

Always make a habit of installing the plug wires onto their grounding posts once you've removed them from the plugs, firing an ignition coil that isn't connected to something can create a dangerous spark, damage the coil by excessive voltage, or can even damage the MPEM.

So if I can turn the engine by hand after I pull the plugs is there anything I can do to get the boat started

First look to see if there is something in the impeller area. Based on your post I thought that was what we were fighting here.

Sorry just trying to eliminate things nothing is obviously stuck in the impellers I pulled some seaweed out but nothing big replaced the plugs and attached the battery but still only get a click from my left engine. Not sure if this is related but now my right engine (normally the harder one to get started is firing right up with no delay.

Were you able to turn the engine over completely at least one full revolution by hand? If so, sounds like starter or starter bendix. Check for 12volts at starter terminal while someone pushes the start button. If 12 volts is there, must be a problem with the starter. If not, could be starter solenoid or cable to starter.

Starters can get water inside them and corrode, they can wear out, as well.

You should be able to get a shop to test the starter if you take it off and take it to them.

I went to begin searching for the starter and the drive shaft will not move again I pulled the plugs and started over but still no movement

Not sure what to do next it seems like the drive shaft freezes when I'm not turning it

If the plugs are out and you can not turn it over by hand, then you have an internal issue. This assumes that the shaft/impeller are free to spin within the tunnel and wear ring.
