Engine replacement

I have a ’95 GTX. I have done a lot of work on it (rebuild carbs, fuel lines, oil and gas tank removal, etc). The ski needs a new engine. I am on the fence on replacing it myself or having a shop/mechanic do it. I don’t want to get in over my head. I’m just looking for some encouragement or wisdom on replacing it myself.

Buehle . . . Bueller . . .
I don’t need a long response. A “it’s a beotch“ of “not a big deal if you rebuilt the carbs”response would help.

I don't know if I'd spend the money on that ski. It probably has a 657X engine. What exactly is wrong with the engine you have now? Is it locked up? Does it spin freely? I was lucky enough to find a good bottom end for the 657X I just put together.

Thanks for the reply. I was trying to avoid the “what’s wrong with it?” so I could get a clear answer or direction on replacing myself.

Generally what's wrong determines whether it needs replacing or not. And if the crank is bad you'll need certain tools that you won't need if the crank is good.
Replacing the engine is "not" complicated but there are things that must be done in order and certain tools that will be needed For instance you'll have to remove the Mag flywheel and PTO flywheel "before" you remove the cylinder head. I use and impact wrench, some people don't. Sometimes you have to heat the flywheel to get it off and in doing so not "melt" certain engine parts. I've had engines that I couldn't get the bolts loose without breaking a few so... it's all relative. Good Luck.

In my edit I corrected "complicated" to "NOT" Complicated. LOL

There are helpful threads on the forum where people have rebuilt their engines and been kind enough to post the process. You'll need a puller to remove the mag flywheel and an "impeller tool" to remove the PTO flywheel. If you will be setting the timing of the rotary valve you'll need the degree wheel. I'd recommend downloading the seadoo manual for your year ski and reading through the process. Good Luck !!

I am in a similar situation; to remove & install myself or pay the pro's?
While I still need to get a price quote I think the peace of mind that would come with paying the pro would make it more worth it. Removal could be a more possible DIY but the install (aligning the driveshaft) requires more finesse than I currently have.
I intend with my broken '95 SPX motor to have a local mech remove it because the impeller housing removal seems like a PITA without the puller device. Then I'll ship it to SBT as core exchange and have the mech install it all to spec because I've raked my brain over this too long.

I wouldn't call any of these people "Pros" Lots of clowns out there not doing a thorough job and charging top dollar. The engine removal and install is pretty straight forward. I've never used a pump removal tool. Most come off pretty well with a little prodding. I'm just guessing but I figure by the time your done you'll be a $3k with this engine job. If you did it yourself you'll save half of that. I'm not sure that a shop will do your carbs and everything else that should be done and if they do you'll pay for it. I look at an engine job as an opportunity to go through the carbs, jet pump/wear ring, and taking a close look at everything. I just did a guys engine on his XP for $2300 and I was annoyed cuz I had to fix so many things. I don't work on people's skis generally but I had a weak moment. LOL He paid $2500 for a repair and engine work that didn't include a new crank so.... give that some thought and do what is comfortable for you. Good Luck !!

Thank you for the cost estimates- that helps get me in the ballpark range for what to expect. In so I will atleast attempt removal myself. I've updated my SPX thread with a question about best technique for impeller housing removal -> Bowser’s SPX

The mechanic I intend to take it to for installation has good reviews.. I agree though I'd want a very thorough job if paying the big bucks. Considering A&R Performance near Spotsylvania, VA

I have 4-'92 XP's and a '91XP....3 of which I have put new motors in.. personal message me and we could go over a few things if you'd like.

Most of the "mechanics" out there are hacks. You COULD end up paying someone a LOT of money, then doing it all yourself.
If you are not mechanically inclined, pay someone or buy another ski.
