Engine R&R ,

Hello everyone, I appreciate your help. I am doing a favor for a pilot who has a 98 GTI Sea-Doo. It has the type 717 engine with a model number of M4736290. Does anyone offer a complete engine for this PWC. My initial search shows a lot of choices but the require some assembly procedures I am unfamiliar with..

You are looking for a complete "drop in" engine? I understand wanting that as disassembly and reassembly can be a bit of work. Personally I don't trust any vendors and time frames are pitiful on turn around. Safest best way for me is to do the complete job yourself as you can control everything and you'll eliminate the expensive shipping charges. You can do some searches here and ask questions about the job as you go along. People readily answer questions and help out and there is lots of experience on this forum. I have a few short videos on Youtube that I made just because I couldn't find what I was looking for and people tend to make a video with 10 minutes of BS and 3 minutes of good information. LOL

1st, what is wrong with the engine?
Is it the "top end" only that is the problem (low compression) ?
If you send it out or repair it, replace the crankshaft, you will need a couple of special tools to make that happen. Under $50. They don't always come apart like you would like either. :D

You'll also have to rebuild the carburetor. That is pretty much a given. Do some searches and feel free to ask questions about what you find. Good Luck !

BRP still sells a re-manufactured 717 short block as of 2 years ago. Not a drop in. Use your old mag, PTO, head and rotary valve stuff. Cylinders are sleeved to standard and a factory crank. I was going to do just a top end but the crank seals were leaking badly so I went this way. It was slightly more expensive than doing it myself when I added in all the shipping. All you need are wrenches, torque wrenches, PTO tool is nice, puller for the mag, a seal kit and some mechanical aptitude. All OEM, has a warranty, and it was fast since the dealer had one 10 miles from my house. You have to return your core or it is real expensive. If you have a dealer close, give them a call. I did and I was surprised.

Do you recall the price of the short block? We need alternatives because the engine shops available with regard to prices, quality, and delivery are all over the place. I don't see how someone charges an extra $800 claiming his engine is better than the next guys. :) parts is parts. LOL Thanks for posting !!

In fall of 2022 part number 421000097 was $2037.38. Core got me back $771.24. So $1266.14 final cost. Washington has a 10% sales tax so those figures include that. No shipping fee.

Sad if they did got out of that business. Guess I got lucky. Dealer said they get a container of parts each season. He had two in his container. I was lucky because they were going to be swapping out the summer container for the winter one soon. My guess was the snowmobile parts were up next.
