I'm been searching and think I found answer to why it gets hot but can't get engine to turn over.

I replaced negative terminal as it was was getting hot and had some glue that was burning off.

I removed pump to verify it wasn't binding
Engine turns freely over by hand w/no plugs.

Had battery on tender and comes back fully charged. Will take to get load tested.

Took starter out and confirmed it works but it gets HOT.
Hoping to find someone to let me borrow starter to confirm if its going bad before I shell out $$ for one or have it rebuilt??

Any other ideas as to why? or hands down starter is going bad.
It always had trouble cranking over but eventually would spin over initial hesitation.

Its not alot of fun getting the cap back on after you take it off, but it isnt something you cant do yourself. If you have a friend for a 3rd or 4th hand its simple to put back together.

Make some marks before you take it apart...alot easier to line back up.

$40-$50 gets you a used OEM starter on ebay... thats my best guess.

Been looking already.
Could I use one from any engine. The 587/657/787???
Would rather support local parters :)

sounds like the starter is stalling, put a meter on the starter and see what kind of current its drawing

Another local.
May be see you at Markham

Care to offer one cheap??

What motor 720? All are the same 580-720...800s are different.

I have lots of those..I would do a aftermarket for $50 and a OEM for $80. I will open it up, clean the armature and brushes, and make sure it will last more than a few starts. Your ebay guys will just send something they made sure worked touching it to a battery.

I bought one for a 787 off ebay last year as I was in a pinch...started the machine 3 times and it quit working. Cleaned it out and it worked the rest of the season.

Waiting for replacement.

Had old one tested(Advance Auto) and it started sparking on the guy . He stood back and started shaking his head.
