Real basic question. When removing the drive shaft, are you supposed to pull it out of the boat towards the stern or are you supposed to pull it towards the bow into the engine bay area? Thanks for your time.

Towards the rear of the boat, be sure to remove the circle c-clip, check the manual.

that's what I thought, I pushed the silver collar back and since mine had a black o ring, I cut it off. I just happened to pull on it(and remove it) while I was over in the bilge area and thought it would NOT have made much sense to take it out that way for re-installation purposes.

I removed slid #10 back to expose #7 and cut #7, is this correct? Refer to the picture.

Why did you cut the o-ring?

No thats no how you remove the drive shaft. You need to get a manual...

You need to push the silver collar back far enough so you can remove the c-clip, then you can pull the drive shaft from the rear. Usually, you need to have the pump installed so you can get enough force on the collar to move it back far enough.

Hmm...Maybe the 97 did have an o-ring, something new every day.. :)

Yes this a common theme, I have read many times that if you come across the o-ring setup to just cut the o-ring off and purchase a c clip. Sooo...refering to the parts break down. Is #7 the location of where the c clip should go? Thanks again.

Nevermind, I just looked up the parts break down on the 1998 Challenger and I saw the difference. On the 1997 it is #7 (o-ring) On the 1998 it is #9 (C Clip). I've attached the 1998 parts break down.

I guess I should regroup the question. After removing the #7 o-ring, should I then, slide the #10 collar forward off of the driveshaft and the pull the driveshaft reward out through the stern?
