Well, I sucked up a tow rope, and had to cut it off. In the process i learned that there's a plastic drive shaft protector. I also learned that a tightly wound rope breaks them easily .

I've been reading, and have seen alot about not needing them. However, a few posts elude to cutting them off, but leaving a little piece on the engine side, to help the water seal to the engine compartment. Mine was totally broken, so it's all gone.

So the question is, do i need at least a small piece of this protector remaining on the engine side, or is it ok to run with it completely removed?

Thanks,

i just took my 2000 challenger out and sucked up my tow rope..i followed wat everyone says and cut it out and removed the last little bits out by removing the spark plugs and twisting the fly wheel...no my boat runs but i cant get it to ingage into forward....does anyone know why this is.....

Mine are gone too ... Only regret is every spring when I grease the PTO the covers would catch the excess grease and prevent it from flinging around and collecting on the bottom of my hatch.

I think that you're talking about something different. You should definitely put the PTO covers back on. The driveshaft protector is a plastic tube that slides over the driveshaft and snaps into place once you have the jet pump removed.
