Difficult to Start--GTI SE 130

Last summer toward the end of the jet ski season, my 2008 GTI SE 130 was a bit difficutl to start. I would hit the start button and it would hesitate , bump, bump, then vrooom start. It seemed like a weak battery, but could have also been a connection problem, I guess.

I had the unit winterized by marine shop that has taken care of it since day 1 ( I bought it new). They disconnect red wire on battery, and all I have to do each spring is reconnect, charge battery in some units, close plug and go. In years past I have not had to charge the battery in the GTI, but today there was no power.

I gave it a trickle charge during the day, and late this afternoon it did start. I put it in the water, it did the same bump, bump...vroom as late last season. I ran it for awhile and it did great. As I approached the lift I turned it off, realized I had missed my mark, and hit the start button to give it another try. This time it just went bump, bump....but would not crank

1. Sound like it's time for a new battery? I did not have time to hook up the charger to see what percentage charge the battery had after the ride. I will do that tomorrow

2. Start and Stop are the same button. Do I hit the top part for start, and the bottom part for stop, or should it work by hitting any part of the button?

Thanks in advance

Morning,

1. It sounds like a battery to me, if you have a multimeter put it in DC volt mode and check what the meter reads with red lead on + and black lead on - of your battery terminals. Should be 12.5V, perform the same test when you get it running, you should see around 14V with motor running. This would confirm your charging system is okay. If you leave it on trickle charge for a day and the problem continues, whereas it starts once and then doesn't start I would say get a new battery.

2. Your Start/Stop button, if you press it with lanyard on it should start, if you press it while motor running, motor should stop. Personally I just yank the lanyard off when I want to shut it off.

Hope this helps and post back any other questions.

I may start doing that myself. I had thought that pushing anywhere on the button was correct, but when I started having some problems I wondered if exactly on the START portion had to be pressed. Thanks for help there.

I hooked battery to charger this morning and it showed 80%. It was 100% when I finished charging it yesterday and got it to crank. I will start with battery.

What is the best source for these type of battery's?
