While at work the other day a guy told me about a older couple who lived next to his parents who had a couple of Sea Doo's that had been sitting in their driveway for a couple of years and thought I might be interested in them. I went to check them out and it was a very nice upscale neighborhood so I was hoping they were in decent shape or ?
When I got there a very nice older woman came to the door and said " why yes we might sale those they have been sitting here for 2 or 3 years and we havent moved them".
Turned out when I uncovered them they were 2 matching 2001 Sea Doo GTX DI models. She told me the story of how they purchased them from the original owners back in 2005 for close to $9,000 for the pair and the aluminum Trton trailer they were sitting on. After they rode them a couple of years they decided they werent running as they should "actually the local dealer convinced them that this was the case". so they had the dealer install 2 new SBT complete engines in 2007 to the tune of another $4500.
They used them until 2007 when one of them died while they were out riding and had to tow it in. The call to the dealer gave them no help because he stated that he simply would not honor the warranty.
So frustrated and dejected they purchased a new pontoon boat and parked them in their driveway in 2009 and they sit there until I came along. While talking to the lady she stated that obviously the one didn't run and said that the other one needed work and wouldn't run according to another dealer they had taken them to. the last time it had ran is when they towed the broken ski in and loaded them up.
I asked her what she wanted for the whole package and she said "give me $1600 and the whole thing is yours"!!!!!
I paid her and brought them home with a smile the whole way home thinking I got a pretty decent deal.
When I got them home I did a compression check on the ski that was known bad and I got a reading of 60 in the front cycliner and 80 in the rear. I charged the batteries and it actually srated and ran but was a little noisy so I quickly shut it off.
When i tried the ski that she said didn't run either I was suprised that while hitting the start button with the plugs out I was COVERED in brown goo water. ughhhh.
So I threw a towel over the holes and ran the started on and off until no more water.
Installed 2 new plugs and she fired right up. The "main" thing was on where the gauges are so who knows???
I did a compression check and got 130 on both cylinders.
I have no idea as to where to go from here but for $1600 I think I did allright....... maybe for once :)
Where do you guys think I should start on the broken ski?????

Yep... you did good. There's $3k worth of parts if you don't want to fix them.

If I was you... I would call up STB and get them to ship you an engine, and get her running. If the top-end is shot... and there is water in the lower half (that's bee sitting for years) I wouldn't even try to revive, or rebuild it.

Brown goo water doesn't sound good, but 130 is good compression for a 951, although the number could have been elevated by water still being in the case. We're you able to get the second one started?

Wow, just saw that you're are from Flatwoods, I'm originally from Ashland, well out by where Industrial Parkway and I-64 cross. I live in Michigan now and just bought my frist PWC ever and was hoping to take it to Kentucky over Labor Day. My family goes out to Grayson most Labor Day weekends, but I'm staying here this year.

I'm no expert, but $1600 sounds like a great deal for your pair and the trailer. I paid $1200 for a '95 SPX and trailer, I guess I should have looked around down there. lol

Wow that's pretty cool. I am only about 10 minutes from the Industrial Parkway. Weve had alot of good times at Grayson cliff jumping and riding the ski's. Oops..... I meant we have NEVEr jumped from the cliff's because that would ne illegal. whew:coolgleam: I am sure Detroit is alot different than Easten Ky.

Thanks for the advice Doc.!!!

The one with 130 ran pretty decent. The one that she stated was bad would still start but it ran rough. I figured if it wasn't completely shot I didn't want to finish it off. It was the one with 60 and 80 compression.

i think it was a good buy, especially if the runner stay's running, the description of brown goo scared me quite a bit, but keep your fingers crossed. I wouldn't be shocked if it ran for a year just fine, but I wouldn't be surprised if it never runs again either, not being negative, but brown goo water isn't good. the decision to dump almost 2 grand into a new replacement engine on the parts ski would have to be up to you, that's a large chunk of change, and there could be more wrong there so proceed with caution. DI's scare me personally.

If you don't "need" two ski's i'l part out or sell the non runner as is and hold onto that cash in anticipation of potential repairs on the runner.
