DESS/ Starting Problems

I just bought 2000 Sportster LE and the laynard/start button is doing funny things! When starting, the lanyard has to be plugged in when turning the battery switch on, i get the double beep and it will start! If I do not start it in the 3 minute time frame, I have to turn the battery swith off then back on in order to get it to start again! Its really a pain in the booty!
Any ideas what is going on? I have cleaned the contacts on the lanyard and the dess post! HELP!

in that first 3 minutes... if you pull the lanyard, and put it back on... do you get your 2 beeps again?

If not... then it's one of 2 things.

1) The lanyard post is bad, and the little switch inside is stuck

2) The MPEM has gone bad. Unfortunately, we have seen this kind of problem before, and it's normally traced back to someone jump-starting the boat... or starting while hooked to a charger.

I have not tried pulling it off then putting back on but I suspected that the post is the problem!
