Hey Guys,

So ive heard a bunch of different things about deleting the oil pump and using a block off plate. I know you can just take the pump gear out and re use the pump, block off the lines and leave the other lines there to oil the rotary. But ive heard a lot of people say dont and others say do it. So what is the pros and cons of doing so or not? Im leaning more towards blocking it off and not having to worry about it. Ill know that if the motor is running then it is getting oil. Also I dont lend out my ski's so Im not worries about other people mixing it right or not. So is it just preference of the owner or is there something I am missing?

Seadoo oil injection systems when properly maintained are very reliable. I would never premix , just my opinion

Pro's:

1) no worry about a pump failure, and engine failure from lack of oil. (since I've never seen the pump actually fail, read below)

Con's:

1) Burn more oil ($$$)
2) More smoke
3) Fouled plugs
4) You can still loose an engine, if you don't properly mix your fuel.
5) On most seadoo's, you still have to leave the oil tank in to lube the RV. (so no gain there)
6) On a family use ski... it's a hassle to mix. Especially if you have a large fuel tank.

Here's the deal. Some of the oil system kind of suck, and are known to fail. On those "Toy's"... it's best to remove it. But on a seadoo... the PUMP never fails. Most of the time, on a seadoo... when someone says that they lost an engine because of the oil system... they either:

1) Really had enough oil, and the engine parts were damaged from water sitting in the engine.

2) They burnt up an engine because of a lean run. (ie not enough fuel)

3) Years of mixing different types and brands of 2-stroke oil, have left a mass in the bottom of the oil tank, the consistency of pudding.

or my favorite...

4) The +15 year old system was never serviced, and either the filter was plugged up, or a hose rotted, and fell off... and the engine was starved of oil. So... this isn't really an "Oil system failure"... this is a "I'm an idiot, and I never checked/serviced a vital part of my ski, and I burnt up my own engine".

With #3... 2-stroke oils don't always mix, and they can have bad reactions. SO... when I get a "New to me" ski... the first thing I do is drain the oil, clean the tank, change the filter... and re-fill the system. (and I change the hoses if there is ANY sign of decay)

Basically... service the system... and enjoy a trouble free toy.

Wow doc.... That is an expertly worded reply and shoul be written in the history books of the seadoo forum. Crowfoot if you don't understand please read again and outloud!!!!

Great response Doc! That hit it on the head 100%. So it's your choice but cons outweight the pros to me. Stick with oil injection

well my motor fried because the oil cable snapped where the lead ball is molded into the end...... it wasn't my fault it was just a weak end i suppose. So 800 dollars later i have a brand new SBT premium motor installed with a 15 dollar block off plate from SBT and knowing i will never fry another motor... PRICELESS

I, too believe in keeping the oil injection. Both of my Yamahas still have it. Like Dr Honda said, you've got to service it and it will work for a very long time. I've replaced all of my oil hoses and used Oetiker clamps during reassembly.

Both of my XPs were converted to premix by a previous owner. I think that it's a pain to premix but what's worse is the extra cost of the additional oil thats being burned. I've got both pumps to the XPs but I don't have the cables and other misc parts. Still, I'm seriously thinking about converting them back to injection.

simplicity is what everyone looks for i presume, on my ski, i dont have a choice, oil in 1 tank, fuel in the other, (its not a weedeater) lol, stay with the injection, time to time, replace the oil injection lines -- real cheap, like 1.50 ft, you need like 4 ft, and yes, if cable breaks, it goes full rich with oil, (built in fail safe) ..........

I'm sure if you looked it over once a year you would have saw corrosion on cable.... MAINTENANCE is important. Once a year look everything over, all cables and pivot moving parts. Grease and lube as necessary !

i believe something else happened, the pump if it fails cause the cable, will go full rich and smoke a bunch ...........maybe the filter clogged, oil line, or just crap in the bottom of tank from mixing different oils in it .....

griz, thanks for the confirmation about the oil pump going full rich if the cable breaks.

I would be more worried about the rv valve seal or case leaking the oil and going dry and you smoking the lower end because there is no more oil supply with your bypass kit. Much more likely that this will happen vs the cable snapping or pump failing.

WOW, for real that was an awesome answer. Thanks Doc ! ! ! I was up to the idea of changing it over but after that great sell, lol, ill just go through and change out the filter and lines. Is there filters in the pump its self or just the inline filter?
