Cracked Cylinder Water Jacket

My brother just picked up a 717 ski that has a cracked jug at the cylinder water jacket. Looks like it wasn’t properly winterized. The cylinder and piston are in good condition. Couple questions:

1) Is this something that can be JB welded together? Or will expansion/contraction and vibration cause it to crack again.

2) If it can’t be JB Welded does anyone have recommendations for someone who can TIG weld something like this? We are in Upstate NY

Its no good. You can weld that but the jug has been pushed out all around the water jacket from freezing and will never seal. If you place the head onto you will se the jug protruding all around the matting surface on top.

I have a 787 that was leaking right there. Crack was not as bad and cylinder was 150 psi. I ground a VEE into the metal and used JB Weld. If you try to aluminum weld that it will just give you problems. JB weld it in place. Rough the surface up and make the patch large (1-1/2" on every side inside and out). When you get R done shape the channel so the gasket seals and you might want to put some RTV or Gasket Eliminator on the O-Ring Seal.

Won't cost you much to try it and worse thing is you'll have to replace it. I'm riding mine till it breaks. LOL No leaks so far. I was concerned wth the heat up and cool down of the engine the JB Weld would eventually pull away from the aluminum due to dissimilar rates of expansion. Like I said, no problems thus far. Good Luck whatever you decide.

Had a similar situation,,the swollen case/jug leaked water from the bottom of the jug.,,,at the base gasket,,,if the jug is slightly warped,,,it may leak on you,,.everything must be square, flush,,,
