Check Engine?
I have gone through this chapter on the engine management display several times and although it's listed as being one of the items monitered, it doesn't seem to give any detail as to why it comes on, or I just can't seem to find anything pertinent to your situation.
If other engine management displays come on, for instance the "Maint" light, well, that means it's time for some routine maintanence. If there is a problem with the engine like overheating, then it too will be displayed. Problems with the injectors and fuel pressure system would be displayed. This "check engine" could be a general fault light in the event the engine management system is not picking up a signal persay from a certain sensor. Although I've read these chapters on the engine, electrical system and the electronic engine management section (there are codes and beeps to inform the user of engine malfunctions) I just can't seem to find anything that will give a pinpoint answer to your question. To check that your digital system is operating properly, it does say that you can take the engine temperature sensor wire off and see if the display informs you of a problem with your temp sensor. That was one way of ensuring that it was operating correctly.
The more I read, the happier I was that I have a 90's model, that's a lot simpler to trouble shoot without going through all this diagnostic stuff. I think it is safe to say from what I've read, that your engine is so well protected with sensors and "limp mode" operation that if you do encounter a serious problem, the electronic monitering system will warn you and take necessary steps in protecting your engine from major damage.......
Man, modern technology just surprises me sometimes......no, make that most of the time!
I'd also say, that I hope other memebers with these newer model PWC's can chime in here and give you a bit more than I can, but with the cost associated with these things, if I was in doubt, I'd take it in and get an OEM specialist to give you a clean bill of health on it!
Hope this was of some help, and welcome to our forum.
