Hello,

I have a 98 GTX that is not charging. Upon putting in a new battery it cranked and ran fine. The next day it will was dead. I have tested the new battery and it registers 12 v. When started and kept at some rpm 3000 - 5000 (guessing) the voltmeter jumped around not reading steadily, but was consistantly below 12 v. The two fuses are good. Can I draw any conclusions from that test? What should I do next? Also, fuel guage and red oil light do not work. Is there a fuse for them?

Thanks

Scott

i know that when I charged the battery for the first time in my 97 GTS that the charge didn't last long. Checked it with a voltmeter and it read 12v but I put it back on the charge overnight. Since then I have had no problems with it.

As for the fuel gauge, check and make sure that each harness is plugged into each other. Prior to doing this you might want to take the gas tank out and verify with the voltmeter that the baffle is working correctly, turn the tank up side down slowly, resistance should increase or decrease. If so you know that the baffle is good and therefore the problem lies either at the connection or in the gauge themselves. The ski has to be running for the gauge to come on.

This is the third battery in 2 years. The ski will run fine for a period of time, say anywhere from 1-3 hours before it quits until the battery is recharged. If the recharged battery stays in the ski attached it will be unable to crank the ski the next day. It must be charged unattached for it to work. I have seen many replies that mention if the voltage is high when ski is running the regulator is bad, but have not seen anything on irregular voltage reading when the ski is running. Any thoughts?

Sounds to me that you have a shorted voltage regulator (rectifier). You almost have no choice except to replace it and then see how it is.
