Challenger Navigation Light

I have a 2000 Sea-Doo Challenger 1800 and I want to change the port / starboard navigation light on the bow. The old light is missing the cover that prevents it from shining back towards the drive. I bought a new light and it comes as one unit with a clip type connector. Seemed easy enough, I thought that I should be able to unclip the old light and clip in the new one.
When I removed the screws from the old light I ran in to a problem. I cannot get enough slack from the old light to be able to disconnect the clip. The wiring from the driver’s helm to the bow is held to the hull inside the boat with cable ties (zip ties). It seems to me that the clip from the old light is cable tied to the side of the boat. I can use a hook and pull out the line running to the bow so there is plenty of slack available.
My question is has anybody removed their bow light and had the same issue, and if you did what did you do to rectify it. I could just cut the old light wires and use some wire connectors to connect the new light but that seems pretty amateur. Any ideas? Thank you.
