Cavitation. What is it?

I hear a lot about it on this board, but am not sure what it means.

basicly its when your jet pump is sucking air instead of water/

When the engine revs but the boat is not really moving or taking off like it should be. It happens when you take off from a stop and is a very similar feel to an automotive clutch slipping.
