I have a 97 seadoo sportster, went for a ride yesterday and when I was alone i was able to get it to full speed no problem however when I had 2 other people with me I couldnt get it past half throttle before the engine would rev high. I have changed the carbon seal, but not sure what to try next. I am changing the wear ring, what else should I look for , this has been a on going issue all summer
Thanks

I just went those the same stuff with a 2001 Sportster a couple weeks ago.

I rebuilt the

Carbon ring and associated components
New wear ring
Skat Trak swirl impeller from ImpPros

Problem solved. Zero cavitation. The boat still isn't a rocket, but you can floor it and it will get up and go without any slipping/revving

The job was actually really easy, the next time I go to do it, I am sure I can do it in 1/4 the time it took me.

If you are OK to a point of throttle and/or weight... then that's the carbon seal opening.

When you did your rebuild... did you notice if your driveshaft had more than one clip location? If it did... push it back, and put the clip in the next position, and that will take care of the problem.

yes i did notice that there were multiple locations for the clip to go, i put it back in the same location that it was in when i took the carbon seal the first time, however i will try a different location since this has been a ongoing issue for me, i ordered a new boot that goes behind the carbon seal also, the boot im talking about is it supposed to be stiff?? thanks dr.honda and St0k3d im going to rebuild like you did, best way to get rid of all problems i guess is to rebuild.
thanks guys

1 thing i forgot to mention is that i get allot of water in the engine compartment especially with a load on the boat,

The water could be coming in the seal... but it can come in 100 other places too. So... one issue at a time.

The boot shouldn't really be "Stiff"... but it's not soft either. Part of the problem with cavitation from an old carbon seal isn't the carbon ring... but it's the boot too. That rubber get's coated in oil, and has to take the heat... so it gets hard. When that happens... it looses it's ability to be a "Spring" and to hold tension on the carbon ring.

BUT... when someone tells me they "Rebuilt" the carbon seal... that boot, the carbon ring, the stainless ring, and the inner O-rings all need replaced. If all you did was replace the carbon ring... that's not a rebuild.

Anyway... put the clip back on more spot closer to the transom, and that will PROBABLY fix the issue.
