Title says it. Anything I should look for when buying. Common Problems. Main Purpose here is Mods what mods are there out there for these. I dont want to have to up the octane in gas either so keep that in mind.

Welcome.

My shop is in Latrobe, and there are a few "Locals" on this board. We will be more than happy to hook up, and help you out when you need it.

Anyway... Before I answer your question... just a quick FYI. The HX was built to be a buoy racer... and they aren't what I would call a "Sport" watercraft. They are extremely narrow, and you can't just sit on them in the middle of a lake. (you will fall over) Also, they are a single person ski. Officially they are rated for 2 people, but you will probably never be able to do it... and even if you do get going with 2 people... you will never be able to re-board in the water. They are a very fun ski... but they aren't for everyone.

To answer your questions....

They really don't have any problems. They have the 720 engine in them... and they are SUPER reliable. If the ski is all original, you will need to replace all the fuel hoses, and service the oil injection. Other than that... just keep a good API-TC oil int he tank, and ride it.

There are a ton of mods out there... but if you find more than 10 HP over stock... you will need to run 91 octane. If you push it up to an extra 25 HP... you will need to run race fuel. The best "Bang for the buck" is to find a "Factory Pipe" tuned pipe, rev-limiter, and water injection. It will add a reliable 20 HP, and push that ski into the low 60's. The nice thing about the HX is that it's pipe is only good for that model, so when they show up on ebay... you should be able to get the complete system for around $200.

If you want to drop by my shop, and talk about it... I'm in the old Latrobe Diecasting building, off of unity st. (A&L Motorsports)

page: 13-04-3

DIMENSIONS HX (5881)
Number of passenger (driver incl.) 1
Overall length 273 cm (107.5 in)
Overall width 85 cm (33.5 in)
Overall height 97 cm (38.2 in)
Dry weight 177 kg (390 lb)
Load limit (passenger and 10 kg (22 lb) luggage) 110 kg (250 lb)

and after riding one of these, it's super fun, if you only have a lake the size of a swimming pool.

Manual trim, no gas guage, (no guages at all that i remember) and if your not moving, you fall in.

getting ON it from IN the water (and not near shore) is crazy hard. and... it felt slow to me. (vs my 2002 XP)

if it's not your primary ski, and not your first ski, get it.

else, i'd highly suggest an XP if you plan to ride alone, or a GSX. or if you have someone you want to bring with you, get a GTX.

if you have a lake where you might go more than 5 miles at a shot, you will be SO sore...

im aware about all of the "issues" with the race style hull. I just wanted to know about the mods and common problems. The person selling this says the dealer said it needs carbs rebuilt because when you ride it it goes then slows down then goes then slows down and tht keeps happening. is that a legit problem and is that what actually whats wrong. and why is it that you say the fuel lines need replaced and do they just get replaced with normal fuel line or an aftermarket alternative. same question about servicing the oil injection what needs done and why does it need serviced. All help is appriciated thanks

OK. I was just giving you info on the HX, because, every summer... we see people who buy them... and then are pissed off because it's not a typical jetski.

The original fuel lines on a mid 90's seadoo are known as "Tempo" fuel lines. These are USCG approved... but they don't like our new automotive fuels. (with alcohol in it) The problem is, that the inside of the hoses decay, and send green goo into the carbs. Since you are having carb problems... I would change all the hoses along with cleaning the carbs.

The oil system service is supposed to be done every year... but most people don't ever have it worked on. There is a filter in the main feed hose, and it can plug up. Also, the hoses feeding the oil system can be ready to crack/split... and if you loose an oil hose... you will loose the engine. At the minimum... I would change the filter, and the 2 small hoses going from the pump, to the manifold... and then bleed the system.

the hx is a great ski its hard to learn how to board and stay on but its totaly possible i use mine everyday and can sit out in the middle of the lake all day and dont have a problem reboarding it. it just takes time and practice. as far as putting a factory pipe on it and using pump gas in it good luck i have tried and failed many times. it will take atleast a 50/50 mix with race gas and 93. you will also never see 60mph on a 720 hx i have a 787 in mine with a few aftermarket parts and i only see 58ish mph the hull was not designed to go fast its ment to race and corner hard. Dr. honda is right about the fuel system and oil system they need to be maintained. all in all the hx is a good ski just know its not your typical sit down where anyone can ride it.
