Broken Stator or MPEM?

I just purchased a 1997 XP and the stator is shot (getting continuity from the legs to ground ... its shorting out). But where I am confused is that I get nothing from the MPEM while the Stator (6 pin connector) connection is unplugged. and as soon as I plug it in it pops the 15A fuse at the solenoid. So I guess the big question is should the MPEM work at all if the stator and sender is disconnected? any help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks

mpem grounds itself thru the stator. Pop the mag cover off, and think you'll find the answer...As for answering your "direct" ?, not sure, only because, for example, the "pick-up" coil will "test" perfect, but yet, its hang'n around behind the mag housing, with a broken bracket...

Thanks for the help, I pulled the cover last night and am now waiting for the Stator to come in the mail, And since I have a short in the Stator my guess is the MPEM will not power up till it has a good ground. Does anyone know if I will do any damage to the MPEM if I was to pigtail a ground from the stator connector to the motor (since I know the stator is bad and have removed it) so I can check the MPEM? or should I just wait and fix one problem at a time?

Thanks
